Bromley Double Chance

Due to these two sides historically not participating in the same tier of English Football, it’s difficult to call it a rivalry or a derby, but there are only 30 miles between these two sides, who currently sit 1st and 3rd in the early League Two table.

They are both unbeaten so far, with Gillingham topping the table due to one more win and one fewer draw. However, the xG number have Bromley as the better side, only overachieving by one point compared with Gillingham being five points better off than expected.

This should be a very tight game, and I think the most likely outcome is a draw, but due to those underlying numbers, I would like to have Bromley on my side for win purposes, especially considering they won both games last season.

Over 1.5 Bromley Cards

As well as being towards the top of the regular table, these two sides are also 1st and 2nd in the yellow cards tally, with Bromley having been shown the most so far, with 17.

They have been shown two or more cards in five out of their six league games so far, with five of their players having already been shown two or more.

Bromley are averaging 14.2 fouls per game so far, and I expect that to increase with this match likely to have a ‘big game feel’ live on Sky.

Over 1.5 Gillingham Cards

Gillingham are joint 2nd in the cards table with a total of 16, and have covered the two or more cards bet in every league game so far, committing an average of 14.5 fouls per game.

They have six players already who have been shown two cards through those first six games. Gareth Ainsworth's sides have always been recognised as masters of the ‘dark arts’, and you can expect that to be on full show here in an early-season big game.

Bromley have won 12 fouls exactly in five of their six league games so far, and 15 in the other.

Over 7.5 Corners

As touched upon, I expect this to be a tight game, and in my opinion, the most likely method of seeing a goal is via a set piece.

Bromley have already scored eight goals from set plays this season, the most in League Two, having a huge target to aim for in Omar Sowunmi. They have also taken the most set-piece shots and have the second-highest xG. Gillingham are joint second with five set-piece goals.

This bet has been covered in all but one of Bromley’s league games so far. Only one of Gillingham’s games has seen eight or more corners, but three times there have been seven corners, and with Bromley as the opposition, I expect this to land.

Omar Sowunmi to have 2+ Shots

As mentioned above, Omar Sowunmi will be the target for every Bromley set piece that is launched into the box. The 6ft 6 centre back has an impressive scoring record for Andy Woodman’s side, scoring five times in 34 league games last season.

In Bromley’s last game against Harrogate, Sowunmi had six attempts on goal, two of which were on target and one of which found the net. He covered this bet on three out of six League Two games this season, so it is not unprecedented, and whilst it could prove tricky against a strong defensive side such as Gillingham, the price of 2.88 is worth a look.

William Hondermarck to be Shown a Card

The early signs are that Hondermarck has found a home at the heart of midfield for Bromley, having dropped down to League Two after three seasons with Northampton.

The powerful midfielder has been shown two cards in five league appearances for The Ravens, whilst committing 1.5 fouls per 90 so far.

In the centre of the pitch in what is likely to be a fiercely competitive game, where there will be plenty of competition for loose balls from knockdowns off long passes, Hondermarck is a prime candidate for a card.

Super Sub

Josh Andrews to be Shown a Card

Andrews is likely to be the target of those aforementioned long passes for The Gills, and at 6ft 3 his battle with Omar Sowunmi should be a fun watch.

Andrews first came to the attention of the EFL during a loan spell with Accrington Stanley, where he scored 5 goals in 20 appearances before earning a permanent move to Gillingham. That was in February 2024, but injury issues have curtailed Andrews' impact until this season, where he looks to be a favourite of Ainsworth in terms of what he wants from a striker, and he has a good mentor in the form of Sam Vokes.

Andrews has been shown two cards so far in the league, whilst averaging 3.6 fouls per 90. This is not a flash in the pan, as when he last played regularly in 2023/24 he averaged 2.5 fouls per 90 and 0.28 cards per 90.

📈 Bromley v Gillingham Form & Tactics

Bromley enjoyed a strong first League Two season, briefly flirting with the play-offs before falling away towards the end of the campaign. They remind me a bit of how Sutton United equipped themselves at this level, a big strong side with a heavy emphasis on set plays. They also have a striker in Michael Cheek who won the golden boot in his first EFL season at the age of 33.

The xG table provided by Fotmob has Bromley as the second best side in the league so far, so there doesn’t seem to be any fortune involved in their unbeaten start of three wins and three draws.

Gareth Ainsworth took over Gillingham in late March 2025, and is yet to taste defeat in 15 league games as their manager. He build teams in a similar mould to Bromley, big, strong, experienced with plenty of direct football and game management thrown in.

Their games are pretty much always low margin, as tends to have been the case for Gillingham for a number of years now, regardless of the manager. Within those 15 games mentioned, there has only been three or goals in a Gillingham game on one occasion.

James Durkin:

  • Durkin has officiated three games so far this season, showing an average of 3.7 yellow cards per game.

  • Bromley’s xG numbers reflect their position, whilst Gillingham’s suggest they are overachieving.
