An early meeting between two newly promoted teams is always one to keep an eye on, but Burnley and Sunderland have had a completely different start to life in the Premier League.

Sunderland to Win

Having smashed West Ham 3-0 on the opening day, Sunderland’s chances of leaving Turf Moor with all three points surely exceed the 24% implied by the odds. Crucially, their big-money signings were able to settle in quickly and exert significant influence against the Hammers, and given how poor Burnley looked against Spurs, this feels like a no-brainer.

A Goal to be Score in Both Halves - No

Despite both Burnley and Sunderland’s opening matches ending 3-0, their meeting on Saturday is unlikely to produce as much excitement. The two sides combined to create just 1.69 expected goals in their respective matches; meanwhile, their last 3 meetings have averaged under 1.2xG between them.

🟤 Clarets Crumble on Opening Day

Burnley struggled defensively in their opener at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, conceding 2.32xGa and falling to a 3-0 defeat. This stands in stark contrast to last season's solidity, when they boasted the Championship’s best defence, shipping just 16 goals across the campaign and not once conceding more than one in a game.

Despite being breached early on, Scott Parker’s men played with tempo at times, particularly in the mid-to-later stages of the first half, albeit without causing Vicario too much trouble.

For Parker, now entering his fourth Premier League season, there’s clearly plenty to address. For now, though, he’ll be hoping Sunderland prove a simpler test..

🔴 Sunderland Spark Premier League Return with Statement Win

There has been a longstanding interest in how Sunderland would perform this season, with many touting them to be the strongest of the newly-promoted sides, courtesy of an ambitious summer outlay.

Although it’s very early days so far, the £140m they’ve laid down looks to be paying dividends, as the Black Cats opened their campaign with a statement 3-0 win against West Ham.

While the margin of victory certainly flattered their attacking numbers (just 0.72 xG created), Sunderland’s ability to restrict the Hammers to just 0.56 xG is also highly commendable.

Dan Ballard, in particular, was excellent at both ends, making a brilliant block to deny Diouf in the first half, before doubling Sunderland’s lead in the second.

📊 Burnley v Sunderland H2H

Sunderland got the better of their opponents across last season's two Championship encounters, registering a 1-0 home victory, alongside a 0-0 stalemate on the road.

The Black Cats were by far the better team in both matches, creating a combined 3.58xG to Burnley’s lowly 0.82.

Despite ultimately splitting the points, their dominance was most evident at Turf Moor, where they managed 5 big chances, including 2 penalties, only for Trafford to deny them from the spot on both occasions.

Looking a bit further back, the two have been pretty evenly matched, with each side managing a win and sharing 2 draws across their 4 matches since 2022.
