This end-of-season Group One promises to be the race of the season. The top-three rated horses in Europe are heading to Ascot - Ombudsman, Delacroix and Calandagan. The first two are 1-1 this term and have a mighty deciding race, while dual Group One-winner Calandagan needs to prove his effectiveness back at 1m2f.

There are potential improvers, too, such as Almeric and Pride Of Arras. I fear that the former may need softer conditions (a dry week is forecast), and the latter appears to run his best races on a flat track.

Ombudsman to Win @ 2.75

OMBUDSMAN can confirm form with Delacroix, who he beat comprehensively in the G1 Juddmonte International Stakes over the extended 1m2f trip at York, in August. That excellent success made it a second Group One prize for the Godolphin-owned son of Night Of Thunder.

A previous course-and-distance triumph at Royal Ascot means he deserves to be favourite this weekend, especially with the good ground in his favour.

Delacroix to Win @ 3.50

DELACROIX is undoubtedly Ombudsman’s main danger. The Aidan O’Brien-trained Dubawi colt used his excellent turn-of-foot to best advantage when mowing down his rival in the G1 Coral-Eclipse at Sandown.

He is likely to be better than seen at York next time - with more of an even tempo almost guaranteed here. If at his brilliant best, the three-time Group One winner can seriously be involved when it matters.

Almaqam E/W @ 9.00

ALMAQAM is one horse who holds better claims than his odds may suggest. Several runners here possess question marks, regarding the trip, track or going. Almaqam has no issues with any of these – having won over this distance on a quick surface.

His sixth on sole outing at Ascot may appear poor, but he was finishing fast in Group One company over a mile, which was far too short for him to be seen at his best. I expect him to be able to challenge for a placing as a thoroughly consistent individual.
