📂 Chelsea v Pafos Cheat Sheet
📈 Chelsea v Pafos Form & Tactics
Chelsea have had two wins and a defeat under Liam Rosenior so far, as we start to learn the system that the new manager wants to play with.
There are a lot of similarities with the system that Maresca played at Chelsea, though Rosenior’s style looks to be a little more risky and doesn’t prioritise control as much as the former manager.
Chelsea were pretty poor generally in their 2-0 win over Brentford at the weekend, but that result did show a capacity to earn results when the Blues aren’t at their best - a trait that has been desperately missing from Chelsea since they switched to the new ownership model.
Rosenior seems more willing than Maresca was at the end of his reign to buy into the youthful approach of the ownership, though every previous manager under this system has eventually grown frustrated, so it’s worth keeping an eye on.
Pafos sit second in the Cypriot top flight and come into this clash sitting just one point outside of the top 24. Many expected Pafos to be struggling with the likes of Kairat Almaty during the Champions League campaign, but they’ve avoided defeat in four of their six matches - only losing against Juventus and Bayern Munich.
They’ll be optimistic of their chances of finishing in the top 24 with Pafos welcoming Slavia Prague on the final matchday, which is a winnable game for the Cypriot side. They tend to be quite pragmatic and will look to sit deep against Chelsea here, though the Blues have been frustrated by this approach in the past, so it could prove effective for Albert Celades’ side.
📔 Chelsea v Pafos Formation & Team News
Liam Rosenior is starting to implement his ideas on this Chelsea side, with the Blues setting up in a 3-2-4-1 when in possession during his tenure so far. This approach is very risky and often leaves a lot of space in central areas, which is perfect for sides that are looking to counterattack against the Blues.
The Chelsea players shouldn’t take too long to adapt to this system, as Maresca’s structure on the ball was similar, but there are a few key differences. Rosenior has been tucking in his fullbacks in his early few games in charge, but this could change soon, as he did like using wingbacks during his time with Strasbourg.
One massive concern for Rosenior at the moment will be the form and general demeanor of Cole Palmer. He scored against Brentford at the weekend but was poor for most of the game, and didn’t even celebrate when he scored. There are rumours that he still isn’t fully fit, which may prompt Rosenior to give him a bit of a rest here.
Furthermore, Chelsea are battling with the flu at the moment, which could rule out Jamie Gittens for this clash. Romeo Lavia and Levi Colwill are long-term absentees, while Gusto and Tosin are doubts.
Pafos will set up in a 3-4-2-1 here, which will appear as a five at the back for most of the game. They have a familiar face at the heart of that backline in David Luiz, who returns to Stamford Bridge to face his former club having enjoyed two successful spells with Chelsea earlier in his career.
Pafos’ main danger man here will be Miraslav Orsic, who has harmed English sides before in Europe and will be a threat in transition. Pafos don’t have any notable injury concerns ahead of this game, but I do see them struggling for fitness in the latter stages of the game, which is an advantage that Chelsea have had in quite a few of their Champions League matches this season.
📊 Chelsea v Pafos Key Stats
