Coventry are absolutely flying at both ends of the pitch and sit top of the Championship. The bookmakers have moved the Sky Blues to the top of their lists for favourites to win promotion, and they are now odds-on to do so. However, there is a long way to go, and Blackburn come to town having won two of their four Championship matches so far this season, Frank Lampard’s team need to keep their foot to the floor.

Coventry to Win

For a team that has won their last three Championship matches by an average score of 4-0 it is fairly surprising that their price is still around 1.50, especially when factoring in that their opponents have only won twice in nine Championship matches so far this season.

Coventry have been well deserving of their wins. Granted, their last win, 5-0, was at Sheffield Wednesday, who have their own problems to deal with, but they have also beaten Birmingham 3-0 and Millwall 4-0, both teams who were fancied for tilts at the top six in pre-season. Birmingham have also travelled to Ewood Park already this season and emerged victorious.

Blackburn have won two away matches, 3-0 at Hull and 1-0 at Watford, neither are top six challengers, and they have lost 1-0 at West Brom, and 3-0 at Charlton. That Charlton defeat was their last away match in the Championship and they were very poor, second-best in every department to Nathan Jones’ team. The bad news for Blackburn is that Coventry have been very intense and coordinated in their off-ball work, as well as being deadly in the final third.

The reason why the price might not be as short as expected is because Blackburn are actually 7th in the expected points table, they are underperforming their data, especially going forward, but Coventry sit top of the expected points table, just as they do in the real points table, so it is a bit of a moot point in the end. Blackburn xG process appears to be playing a role in giving us this generous price on a Coventry win.

📈 Coventry v Blackburn Form & Stats

We already know Coventry’s recent results, and that they are currently unbeaten in the league, so it is perhaps worth delving into the data to look into how this has come together for Frank Lampard.

Coventry sit top on so many metrics. They have the highest expected goals total, although they are overperforming that 22.4 xG by almost five goals. They also sit top for shots on target by some distance, big chances created by some distance, accurate crosses per match, and most touches in the opposition box by almost 100 touches more than the 2nd-placed team, Bristol City.

One might think that they have been lax defensively then. Not a bit of it, they are 2nd to Middlesbrough by 0.3 xGA in the expected goals against standings too.

Blackburn come into this match off a break, but without a win in three Championship matches, the aforementioned 3-0 at Charlton, but then a 2-1 home loss to Swansea and then a 1-1 draw at home to Stoke. They could’ve won the Stoke game with a big chance at the end, but that sequence of results has left Rovers in 21st, just outside the relegation zone, over the international break.

Rovers are massively underperforming their expected goals. They have scored seven from an xG of 10.5, they have also conceded more than expected, conceding 11 goals from 9.2 xGA. Their xGA record is actually 7th-best in the league, so they are actually fairly well organised. Rovers are also physical; they rank top of the league for tackles made.
