It’s a huge night at the top end of the Championship as 1st and 2nd place look to strengthen their claims for automatic promotion.

Despite their league positions, there’s a stark contrast in the mood of both fanbases, Middlesbrough overtook Coventry on Monday night having won their last six Championship matches. On the other hand, Coventry have seemingly collapsed despite looking destined for automatic promotion; Ipswich and Millwall are also breathing down their neck.

📈 Coventry v Middlesbrough Form & Stats

The home side are going through the motions at the moment, supporters are extremely worried about their fall off in recent months. It’s been a worrying spell of form, after seemingly cruising towards the title in the first half of the season, they’ve hit a lean patch.

Coventry have now picked up just 12 points from their last 10 games, putting them 15th in the form table over that period. The hosts come into this game on the back of defeats against Norwich and QPR, in addition to a frustrating draw at home to Oxford. Despite their poor run of form, Coventry’s home results have still been solid; they’ve dropped just nine points at home all season.

Middlesbrough are flying at present. After a mixed start to Kim Hellberg’s reign, the visitors have now won their last six consecutive Championship matches. Boro were particularly impressive against Sheffield United last Monday, taking the game to their opposition and deservedly picking up three points, Bramall Lane is certainly not an easy place to go for visiting teams under Chris Wilder.

The visitors suddenly find themselves top of the league after overtaking Coventry on Monday night, there’s no doubt this could be a huge game in the race for the title. The away side will be confident of extending their winning run to seven.

📔 Coventry v Middlesbrough Formation & Team News

Lampard employs an attack-minded and progressive 4-2-3-1 formation, they look to press high out of possession and employ a high line. On the ball, there’s an emphasis on overloads, overlapping full backs, and quick transitions from defence to attack.

Coventry love to exploit wide areas and produce a very high volume of crosses, there’s a reliance on their wingers to provide directness and ball-carrying ability on the counter-attack.

The injury situation has improved at Coventry, there was an absence of many players around the festive period. Ephron Mason-Clark sustained a foot injury against Oxford, there is still a chance he could make the game though, while Oliver Dovin is also injured.

Kim Hellberg has transformed Middlesbrough into an ultra-aggressive, possession-dominant side, focusing on high intensity pressing. His style focusses on quick vertical passing, constant player rotations, and attacking in the final third to disrupt rigid defensive structures. Middlesbrough look to be relentless off the ball and suffocate their opposition for long periods. This was a hallmark of Hellberg’s approach when manager of Hammarby.

Middlesbrough have been playing a 4-3-3 formation, although this can sometimes be interchangeable with a 4-2-3-1 to facilitate a more attacking role for the most progressive central midfielder.

Middlesbrough are currently without Alex Bangura, George Edmundson, Alfie Jones, and Darragh Lenihan.
