It was a memorable comeback at Villa Park last weekend, as Jhon Duran put in a star performance off the bench – his brace rescued Aston Villa from 3-1 down to come away with a point, 3-3, against Liverpool. Following Tottenham’s loss against Man City midweek, fourth spot has been secured for Unai Emery, who might not be so stressed for the final fixture at Selhurst Park.
Following promotion back to the Premier League season in 2013/14, Crystal Palace secured their 11th successive mid table finish, with a points tally in the range of 40-50. Zooming out, the Eagles have been incredibly consistent, although this season has been far from smooth sailing. A constant stream of injuries to key players throughout the season held them back, although a managerial switch from Roy Hodgson to Oliver Glasner has yielded a significant change in fortunes for the South London club.

⚔️ Crystal Palace v Aston Villa Head-to-Head
Crystal Palace fans might not have been surprised by the heroics of Duran against Liverpool, as the Colombian netted late on in the last head-to-head between these two to spark a comeback. Palace took the lead early in the second half through Odsonne Edouard, and the three points seemed safe and secure until Duran fired in the equaliser in the 87th minute. In the nine minutes of allocated injury time, Douglas Luiz converted a penalty, and Leon Bailey scored as well to secure a 3-1 victory for Unai Emery’s men.
It was a deserved result, as the home team created 3.21 xGF, compared to the visitors’ 1.17. Crystal Palace were notably without Michael Olise, but manager Roy Hodgson also missed the trip to the Midlands due to illness. A lot has changed for the Eagles since that game in September, though.
📊 Crystal Palace Form and Stats
Oliver Glasner has got the Eagles soaring once again since replacing Roy Hodgson. The Austrian manager has overseen 13 games in South London, and has a record of six wins, four draws and three losses, which is impressive. Boosted by the return of key players like Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze, Palace have only been shut out once under Glasner. The feeling around camp will certainly be positive, and fans are optimistic for next season.
Although Palace might have nothing to play for, avoiding defeat against Villa will mean they finish the season on a seven-game undefeated streak. Michael Olise has massively influenced that run, as has Mateta – whose resurgence has been phenomenal. He is the most clinical striker in the Premier League this season, with a 30% conversion rate, and has scored ten goals in 13 starts under Glasner.
📊 Aston Villa Form and Stats
It’s been a difficult period for Unai Emery, without a win in five, also being dumped out of the Europa Conference League unexpectedly by Olympiakos. However, a Champions League place is mathematically safe for next season, which will certainly provide some relief.
Duran could be in line to provide some welcome rest for Ollie Watkins, who has scored just one goal in his last seven starts. Emery might also be open to consider some defensive rotation. It’s been an extremely busy period for his troops, having to balance European football with the top four race.
💰 Crystal Palace v Aston Villa Best Bets
Given Aston Villa’s downturn in form in recent weeks, paired with potential complacency having secured a top four spot, Crystal Palace to win on Paddy Power at 1.75 looks appealing. Only Man City have beaten Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park since Glasner took over, and an unbeaten run to end the season is certainly something to play for.
Mateta has been the biggest beneficiary of the Glasner system – swiftly becoming a fan favourite at Selhurst Park. The striker has scored in every home game under the new manager – eight goals in six games. Given that the new system caters perfectly to his strengths, Mateta to score anytime at 2.20 on Paddy seems generous given his recent form, as he looks to end the season on an even higher note.
