I think it’s a real stain on the sport that Palace have been demoted to the Conference League from the Europa League due to some arbitrary rule which UEFA have decided to use to make an example out of Palace. I have no doubt in my mind that if this were a big six club, UEFA would have found a way to bend the rules slightly. It’s no surprise that Lyon are still in the Europa League despite breaking similar rules.

However, Palace being in the Conference League offers a real opportunity for Oliver Glasner to win his third trophy with the club. He won the Europa League with Frankfurt during his time with the Bundesliga side so he has direct experience of this style of competition. The biggest threats to Palace in the Conference League at the moment are sides like Besiktas, Fiorentina, Strasbourg and Shakhtar - all sides the Eagles will feel they can beat over two legs.

Palace have been one of the most impressive sides throughout the calendar year. They’ve beaten the best two teams in English football over the last 10 years in back to back cup finals, and boast one of the strongest away defensive records in the division which would suggest that they are primed for the European away games they will have to contest in the Conference League this term. 

🔴 Poor away form a worry for Fredrikstad

Fredrikstad were in the running to qualify for the Europa League but were knocked out in the most recent round by Midtyjjland, setting up this tie against Crystal Palace. The Norwegian side currently sit eighth in the Eliteserien and have notably only won one of their eight away games this season which is a record that makes excellent reading for Palace.

They finished fifth in the Norwegian top flight last season but their most notable accomplishment from 2024 was winning the Norwegian domestic cup, upsetting Molde in the final on penalties. You can easily draw similarities to Palace’s triumph over Manchester City in the FA Cup final, but Fredrikstad may really struggle here when considering their shocking away record this season.
