Alexander Isak to have 2+ Shots on Target

Alexander Isak scored his first goal for Liverpool during the week as the Reds ran out 2-1 winners over Southampton in the Carabao Cup. Any doubts about him starting have been settled by Hugo Ekitike’s silly sending off in the same game, leaving Liverpool with little option other than to start their star man from the kick-off.

Isak had two shots on target in just 45 minutes against the Saints, and it’s hard to see how finding the target on a few occasions doesn’t become a regular occurrence for the Swedish striker with the volume and the quality of the chances that Liverpool generate. Arne Slot’s side scored more goals than any other team in the Premier League last season and averaged 6.10 shots on target per game - also the most in the division.

They’ve added one of the best strikers in the league to that set up so it’s hard to see how that doesn’t result in an increase for both Liverpool and Isak’s shot on target numbers. Isak had 46 shots on target across his 34 Premier League appearances last season (1.50 per 90).

Jean-Phillipe Mateta to have 2+ Shots

Liverpool have won all seven of their matches so far this season across all competitions, but they’ve only kept clean sheets in two of those games, which will be a slight concern for Slot that Mateta and Palace can more widely take advantage of.

Palace scored twice against Liverpool in the Community Shield just before the start of the season. They went on to win the trophy on penalties with their counter-attacking style, causing Liverpool real problems. Mateta scored from the penalty spot in that game and had three shots overall, which would suggest that he can hurt Liverpool again here.

The main issue Liverpool are having defensively is their fullbacks pushing too high up the pitch and not having the cover behind them, particularly Milos Kerkez, who has had a tough start to his Liverpool career. Mateta and the rest of the Palace frontline can take advantage of this insecurity, which is a scenario that should see Mateta have at least two shots.

🔵 Palace Looking To Protect Unbeaten Run

Palace have started this season in solid form under Oliver Glasner, with two wins and three draws from their opening five games of the season. Their two wins this term have both come on the road against Aston Villa and West Ham, so they’re still searching for their first three points at Selhurst Park.

Home performances were a bit of an issue for Palace last season; they only won six of their 19 games at Selhurst Park, which is a record quite a bit lower than you’d expect when considering how difficult it has been to visit the ground in recent seasons.

It’s pretty impressive that Palace have managed to brush off the loss of Eze up until this point, but I do think the lack of creativity will catch up to Palace here. Some of their new signings have settled in well. The versatile Christantus Uche is worth keeping an eye on for the Eagles this season.

Who Can Stop Liverpool?

Liverpool just keep winning. Despite Hugo Ekitike’s moment of madness during the week against Southampton in the Carabao Cup, where he was sent off for taking off his shirt having already been booked, Liverpool still managed to progress to the next round of the cup, making it seven wins from seven matches for Arne Slot.

It’ll be a little concerning for the Dutch manager that Liverpool have only managed to keep clean sheets in two of these wins, which highlights an underlying defensive vulnerability. This hasn’t been an issue for Liverpool as of yet, but Slot will want to get this under control as it could spiral when we reach the busier festive period of the season.

Alexander Isak scored his first goal for Liverpool in their 2-1 win over Southampton during the week and could be in line to start here with Ekitike suspended. Federico Chiesa’s performance against the Saints was also eye-catching, and he could be rewarded with a start here. Injuries have derailed his Liverpool career so far, but there’s still a really dangerous attacking option there if he can stay fit.

📊 Crystal Palace v Liverpool H2H

The most recent meeting between the sides was in the Community Shield. The game ended in a 2-2 draw with Palace winning the trophy on penalties.

The most recent league meeting also ended in a draw with Palace coming away with a 1-1 scoreline from Anfield, though Liverpool did win 1-0 at Selhurst Park last season.
