📂 Crystal Palace v Man United Cheat Sheet
📈 Crystal Palace v Man United Form & Tactics
Crystal Palace have kicked on from their FA Cup triumph last season and are now one of the toughest sides to beat in the Premier League. They’ve only lost two of their 12 games in the top-flight this campaign, with remarkably only seven defeats all calendar year.
Most of the praise for this impressive record has to be attributed to Oliver Glasner. Palace enter this game unbeaten across their last five matches in all competitions, and are yet to be beaten at Selhurst Park in the Premier League this term.
Glasner will want his side to be a bit more clinical in their home matches, with four of their five draws in the Premier League this season coming at Selhurst Park. No side has drawn more games than Palace in the Premier League so far this season (five).
Manchester United always seem to take a few steps back just when you think they are finding some momentum. Their performance against 10-man Everton last time out was dreadful, and a lot of the blame falls on Ruben Amorim. He was too passive in the game and didn’t react to the man advantage quickly enough; he was also stubborn in keeping three defenders on the pitch when another body in the box would have been useful.
Manchester United have only won one of their six games on the road this season, and won’t be relishing the trip to Selhurst Park, having failed to win at the stadium since 2020. Palace’s organisation and strong form this season will cause them issues, with United needing to be bolder in the final third with the options they now have.
📔 Crystal Palace v Man United Formation & Team News
Crystal Palace will line up in a 3-4-3 shape here, but it is very different to the system that Amorim likes to use. Palace pack the midfield with four bodies at times, making it almost impossible to play through them and force the opposition to go around them, where they are also doubled up with a wide centre back and wing back.
I don’t think there is a better side in the Premier League, other than Arsenal, when it comes to defensive organisation. Palace are so effective at closing space and limiting the amount of chances that their opponents generate - Palace have only conceded nine goals this campaign from an expected xG against of 15.0, which is the biggest xG against difference in the Premier League.
Manchester United will also line up in a 3-4-3, but Amorim’s system has more glaring issues. I still think Bruno Fernandes is wasted in the middle of the park with the attributes he can bring to the side in the final third, and while Casemiro has improved this season, there is still so much space to cover in those central areas.
The wing backs are also an issue, Amorim has a vision to play with attacking players in these roles, and this has worked at times with Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo down the right-hand side, but it inevitably opens up United to being a bit light at the back. My feeling is that United will continue to struggle against sides that play mainly through transitions, as their rest defence is severely lacking.
📊 Crystal Palace v Man United Key Stats
Manchester United have not won at Selhurst Park since 2020.
Crystal Palace have drawn more games than any other side in the Premier League this season (five).
Manchester United have seen BTTS in four of their last five matches across all competitions, winning two of those games.
Only Arsenal (six) have conceded fewer goals than Crystal Palace (nine) in the Premier League this term.
