📈 Man United v Crystal Palace Form & Stats

Manchester United have been really impressive under Michael Carrick so far, with the interim boss guiding United to victories over Arsenal and Manchester City, as well as instilling a level of confidence in the side against teams that they're are expected to beat.

Their 1-0 win over Everton last time out was a good example of that resilience, which was a game that United would have easily folded in earlier on in the season, so this is probably the most telling improvement that Carrick has made to the side. It’ll be interesting to see how long it lasts. United haven’t faced a real setback yet, so we will have to see if the players throw another manager under the bus when things get a bit more difficult.

The good news for Manchester United is that they are currently in control of the Champions League race. Their main rivals in Chelsea and Liverpool both have Champions League and FA Cup assignments from now until the end of the season, so United should, in theory, be the most energetic and well rested side of their Champions League qualification challengers.

Crystal Palace’s season is starting to dwindle a little, and it’s mainly the fault of Oliver Glasner. I think Glasner is a top coach in terms of his tactical ideas and instructions, but he has been naive in his approach in press conferences and in voicing his frustration about the club's transfer policy. The noise he’s created has directly affected Palace’s form, with the only thing left for the Eagles to fight for being the Conference League.

That being said, Palace are still one of the toughest sides to score against in the Premier League. I’d say that only Arsenal have a better mid block shape than Palace, with Glasner’s side being very effective at shutting down space in central areas. This has led to Palace keeping 10 clean sheets in the Premier League this season; only Manchester City and Arsenal have kept more.

📔 Man United v Crystal Palace Formation & Team News

Michael Carrick has kept things simple for now at Manchester United and is lining the side up in a 4-2-3-1 shape. Carrick’s main advantage as the Manchester United coach at the moment is that he isn’t obsessed with implementing his own tactical ideas or vision - he is setting up the side as he sees best with the players currently available to him.

Manchester United are missing some key players at the moment, the most notable of which is Lisandro Martinez who can’t seem to put together a run of games without picking up an injury. Patrick Dorgu and Matthijs De Ligt are longer term absentees, while Mason Mount also remains unavailable as another member of the United squad who can’t seem to keep fit.

Crystal Palace will line up in their usual 3-4-3 shape, with their default usually being to sit in a mid block. Palace are incredibly effective in this structure, though they have found it a bit difficult at times to offer an attacking threat from this solid shape, though Jorgen Strand Larsen has started brightly and looks like he can be a reliable focal point for Palace.

Jean-Philippe Mateta is the obvious absence from the Palace squad at the moment, but Glasner will also be without Jefferson Lerma and Eddie Nketiah for their trip to Old Trafford.
