Scotland travel to Denmark for their opening 2026 World Cup Qualifying match. Greece and Belarus make up the rest of the group. Here are my best bets for Friday's clash.

These recommended Best Bet Builder Bookmakers will serve you well for this weekend's World Cup Qualifiers.

Denmark to Win @ 1.55

I think Denmark will prove too strong for what is a struggling Scotland side on Friday night. The Danes have suffered just one defeat across their last 11 matches at home, with that solitary loss coming against star-studded Spain.

What’s more, the Red and Whites reigned supreme in each of the other 10 fixtures across that 11-game stretch, including a 1-0 win over Portugal in a Nations League quarter-final tie earlier this year.

As for Scotland, they have given the Tartan Army very little to cheer about since qualifying for Euro 2024, triumphing in just three of their 11 competitive fixtures since arriving at last summer’s showpiece.

Steve Clarke’s side were relegated to Nations League Group B earlier this year after suffering a humbling 3-0 defeat to Greece in the second leg of a play-off tie.

The apathy towards the national team intensified when Iceland swept Scotland aside 3-1 in a friendly fixture at Hampden back in June, and a continuation of the decline looks likely in the Danish capital.

Both Teams to Score @ 1.95

While I would expect Scotland to come up short on Friday night, they are more than capable of contributing to the scoring in Copenhagen. Steve Clarke’s side have scored at least once in eight of their last 10 matches across all competitions. Across that 10-game sample, Scotland have scored away from home against the likes of Portugal, Poland and Greece, which suggests that they may be able to record a consolation strike here.

As mentioned, Denmark boast a strong home record, however they have not been accustomed to keeping clean sheets in front of their own supporters in recent times. In fact, the Red and Whites have failed to silence their opponents in five of their last 11 assignments on home soil. Finland, Kazakhstan, Slovenia and Northern Ireland have all made the net bulge on their respective visits to this venue over the last couple of years, so I would fancy Scotland to follow suit.

Over 8.5 Corners @ 1.53

I would be surprised if we don’t see a minimum of nine match corners on Friday night. Denmark posted some eye-catching team corner totals during their home matches in the Nations League, earning six, eight and seven across their contests with Switzerland, Serbia and Spain in the Danish capital, with two of those three matches breaking the over 8.5 corners barrier.

What’s more, there were a combined total of 13 corners when Denmark played host to Portugal in a Nations League quarter-final tie earlier this year.

Despite being relegated from Nations League Group A, Scotland racked up some noteworthy corner totals, particularly away from home. The Scots managed to earn six corners away at Portugal and then five when taking on Poland in Warsaw, not to mention they managed to win five corners when facing Denmark at this venue during a qualifier for the 2022 World Cup.

With all that in mind, both teams look well placed to contribute to a flag kick count of nine or more on Friday night.

Scott McTominay to have 1+ Shots on Target @ 1.44

Scott McTominay will likely be Scotland’s danger man again in the Danish capital on Friday night. The 28-year-old is a hugely important figure for Scotland, and in true talismanic style, he is known to pop up with crucial goals for his country. In fact, 11 of McTominay’s 12 strikes on the international stage have arrived across his previous 24 outings for Scotland, the most recent of which was against Greece away from home earlier this year.

As such, McTominay looks well worthy of support to register a minimum of one shot on target here - something that he has managed in eight of his last 11 appearances for Scotland.

It’s also worth noting that McTominay has been Scotland’s designated penalty taker in recent times, and that only adds to the appeal of siding with him to hit the target at least once against a Denmark side that are not exactly renowned for being watertight at the back.

Mika Biereth to Score or Assist @ 1.80

Mika Biereth looks a terrific value option in the To Score or Assist market on Friday night. The Danish forward was nothing short of a revelation after joining Monaco in January, scoring 13 goals and registering two assists across his 16 appearances in Ligue 1 last season. Dig a little deeper and it can be seen that Biereth scored three consecutive hat-tricks for Monaco at home in the French top-flight last term.

Biereth’s goalscoring exploits saw him earn his first senior call-up for Denmark in March, striking against Lithuania in his most recent appearance for the national team. The 22-year-old is now in line to start against Scotland on Friday night - a fixture that I think represents an excellent opportunity for him to add to his international tally.

Steve Clarke’s side have failed to keep a clean sheet in 11 of their last 14 competitive contests, making Biereth a strong contender for either a goal or an assist.

Anthony Ralston to Commit 2+ Fouls @ 2.50

Look for Anthony Ralston to commit two or more fouls against Denmark on Friday night. The Scotland right-back’s love of a strong tackle often lands him in trouble with match officials. Ralston was a regular offender for Scotland during the most recent edition of the Nations League, committing exactly two fouls in four of his six appearances during the group stage of the competition. It's also worth noting that Ralston was shown a yellow card during Scotland’s 2-1 defeat to Portugal last year.

Ralston was also on the referee’s radar during last week’s Old Firm derby, with the Celtic defender committing two fouls during the first-half of that showdown. The 26-year-old should be kept busy again on Friday night given that he could be in a direct battle with Denmark’s Mikkel Damsgaard.

The Brentford ace has been fouled at least once in each of his two Premier League appearances this season, earning his side two free-kicks away at Sunderland last Saturday.

John McGinn to be Shown a Card @ 2.62

Whether he is representing his club or his country, John McGinn is always a prime candidate to pick up a card. The all-action Scotsman tends to find himself in the thick of the action more often than not, and I would certainly expect that to be the case against Denmark on Friday night.

McGinn has racked up a noteworthy 14 yellow cards across his 77 caps for Scotland to date, which amounts to an average of a booking every 5.5 games on the international stage. However, upon closer inspection, it can be seen that  McGinn has tackled his way into trouble in three of his last 10 appearances for his country, one of which was a friendly fixture with Iceland in June.

Typically deployed in a right midfield role for Scotland, McGinn could cross paths with Patrick Dorgu on Friday night. The Danish left-back has drawn a sizeable six fouls across his two Premier League appearances for Man United this term, and he could be in for some rough treatment from the aforementioned McGinn.

📈 Denmark v Scotland Form & Tactics

Denmark enjoyed a strong Nations League campaign, reaching the quarter-final stage after placing 2nd in Group A4. Brian Riemer’s side pushed Portugal all the way in the last eight, winning the first leg before falling to an extra-time defeat in the return match in Lisbon.

The Red and Whites showed no signs of a hangover from that loss when defeating both Northern Ireland and Lithuania at home in a pair of friendly fixtures back in June, claiming 2-1 and 5-0 wins respectively.

It’s also worth pointing out that Denmark have won eight of their last nine competitive home matches across all competitions.

Denmark tend to set up with a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Mika Biereth expected to spearhead the hosts’ attack on Friday night.

Scotland have really struggled for consistency since exiting Euro 2024. Steve Clarke’s side kicked off their Nations League campaign with three straight defeats before avoiding automatic relegation after collecting seven points from their subsequent three fixtures.

The Scots appeared to be on course to preserve their Group A status after winning the first leg of their play-off tie 1-0 away at Greece, only to be humbled 3-0 at Hampden just three days later.

Clarke came in for criticism from some fans after that defeat, and pressure mounted further following a 3-1 friendly loss at home to Iceland in June. However, Clarke and Co. have since steadied the ship somewhat with a 4-0 win over Liechtenstein.

Scotland went with a 4-2-3-1 system more often than not during their Nations League campaign, though Clarke has also been known to deploy 5-3-2 and 5-4-1 formations during his time in charge.
