📈 Bristol City v Derby Form & Tactics

Bristol City are that old adage of consistently inconsistent. They are coming into this match with two wins, two losses, and a draw in their last five matches. Ashton Gate has been a pretty happy place for them, though recently, winning four of their last five here, scoring 14 in the process. It should also be mentioned, however, that there is growing unrest among the supporters about the lack of support and investment there is in the playing squad, not helped by speculation that Zak Vyner is about to leave the club.

However, this is not to say that they are dominant at home. So far this season, City have only managed a home xG differential of +0.15 xG, which is scant compared to some of their promotion rivals. They are joint top of the league for clean sheets with 11; they are also eighth for expected goals for and shots on target, but only 16th for expected goals against. All in all, the data points towards a midtable team.

Derby are now fully focused on the league, having gone out of the FA Cup in the opening round, and they have become very adept at picking up points consistently. There have only been two defeats in their last ten league games, and they are unbeaten in three going into this match.

Derby’s top ten position is not backed up by performance data. They are ranked 15th in the expected points table; they are actually running at a -0.32 xG differential per match, and that increases to -0.52 when only considering away matches. Yet Derby are ranked third in the league for points won away, having won seven and lost four of 14 away league games. They are a conundrum for performance analysts, but the bottom line is that they seem to be effective in both boxes, scoring more than they should and conceding fewer than they should, too.

📔 Bristol City v Derby Formation & Team News

There is disruption to Gerhard Struber’s team with the enforced absence of Zak Vyner due to links away from the club, which adds to the hole left by Anis Mehmeti this window as well. This is bringing the number of options down, but there is still enough first-team quality to pick a strong team in Struber’s preferred 3-4-3 formation.

Sam Bell could come in on the left of the front three, while George Tanner joins Rob Atkinson and Rob Dickie in the back three.

Derby are more likely to play a 4-2-3-1 shape, and with no new injury concerns for John Eustace, they are at close to full strength, if we put aside Carlton Morris’ long-term issues. Matthew Clarke is back after his one-match suspension and will return to bolster the back line, and Danny Batth is fit to return to the squad as well, so Derby’s bench could look very strong indeed.
