Introduction
Viewed by many as the favourites for the tournament, England have a lot of history to fight to be able to win their first-ever European Championships.
There can be no doubt that the talent is in the squad, especially going forward. The betting for the Ballon d’Or in 2024 currently sees three English players in the top six of the contenders.
There are issues, of course. The defence looks much weaker than the attack in terms of personnel, the evidence on the pitch is that there is a mistake in them as well. There are also concerns about whether the head coach is really at the top level to win a tournament such as this.
At this stage, it is very rare to see a winner of a men’s football major tournament who has never won it before. Portugal did it in the Euros in 2016, and Spain won their first tournaments in Euro 2008 and then their first World Cup in 2010, but England have fallen just short in recent tournaments. Will this change in 2024?

🔮 Euro 2024 predictions
Tournament Prediction: Semi-Finals
England have a potentially good route to the latter stages of the tournament. They have been drawn into Group C, alongside Denmark, Serbia, and Slovenia. Denmark are always a tricky outfit, and the recent record between Denmark and England is very tight, but England have a 100% record against Slovenia and haven’t played Serbia since 2003, but they are ranked down at 33 in the FIFA rankings.
England are heavily odds-on to win the group, something that they did at both Euro 2020 and the most recent World Cup in 2022. If they were to achieve this again, then their route to the semi-finals looks eminently achievable, with Gareth Southgate’s squad priced at 5.50 on Sky Bet to bow out in the semi-finals. France could await in the semi-finals and recent history does favour Les Bleus in that match-up, albeit the matches have been very tight.
We would expect England to reach the last four, but there is still something that feels missing when trying to get over the line. It is, of course, the case that winning experience has to be earned somewhere, but nations such as France have that in abundance already.
England Euro 2024 Qualifying Data
📖 How they qualified
They finished top of qualification Group C, winning six and drawing two. The draws were away in Ukraine and, slightly surprisingly, in North Macedonia, though by this stage qualification was pretty much guaranteed. England have made a habit of qualifying in a facile fashion in recent campaigns.
Italy were beaten home and away by the Three Lions and Ukraine were professionally dealt with at Wembley as well. They conceded only once at Wembley in their four matches there and although they didn’t score as many goals as others in qualification, the group was also much more difficult than many other groups with Italy, Ukraine, and North Macedonia being pretty tough options from the second, third, and fourth seed pot.
Harry Kane finished the qualifying campaign as England’s top scorer with eight goals, he also registered two assists. Bukayo Saka notched four times as well, chipping in as England’s next-best goal contributor.
Jordan Pickford played every minute in goal for England, and Harry Maguire was the only outfielder to do the same over the qualifying campaign.
👕 Players to watch
Of the three Ballon d’Or contenders in the market, it is probably Harry Kane who remains most influential in England’s chances of ultimate success. Now at Bayern Munich, Kane has expanded his horizons, and in doing so, has proven that he is a scorer of goals in any environment.
Kane has 63 goals for England in 90 caps, a pretty incredible strike rate, but it’s his overall game, the way he drops in to receive possession, holds it up and plays killer passes for the likes of Bukayo Saka, that makes him so effective for England. He would be the hardest player for England to replace if injured.
Jude Bellingham broke into the England team ahead of the 2022 World Cup, so this is not his tournament debut, but his star has risen massively since his move to Real Madrid last summer. He is now a big presence in the team and his move forward into the #10 position could be a key one for Gareth Southgate this summer.
Phil Foden is also coming off a career-best season. However, he has yet to really implant himself into this England team and deliver a standout performance or play a standout tournament for his country. Southgate has the responsibility to find a way to allow Foden to deliver his best in an England shirt.
