England Women v Netherlands Women
Kick Off: Wednesday 9th July at 17:00
Competition: UEFA Women's Euro
The pressure is already on Sarina Wiegman and the Lionesses at the European Championships after England fell to a 2-1 defeat against France in their opening game of the tournament. England are attempting to defend the title after their successful campaign back in 2023 but this game is a must-win if they are to make that happen.
The Netherlands won their opening game of the tournament pretty comfortably with a 3-0 win over Wales, which has put them in an excellent position, alongside France, to qualify from the group and reach the knockout stages.
⭐ England Women v Netherlands Women Predictions and Best Bets
This is a must-win game for the Lionesses, even a point is unlikely to be enough after their loss in the opening game against France. Sarina Wiegman’s side have made a habit of turning up in important moments across her tenure and they’ll need to tap into that spirit here if they are to defend their crown this year.
England were rattled by two quickfire France goals in their opening game of the competition which slightly exposes one of the fears that many had in the build-up to the competition for the Lionesses - that the missing personnel at the back will make it difficult for the Lionesses to go deep in this competition. The absence of Millie Bright in particular is a big loss for England, especially when dealing with aerial balls into the box.
Given England’s issues at the back, combined with the fact that anything other than three points could see England exit the competition at this very early stage, suggests that this should be quite an entertaining encounter but one that England can ultimately edge.
⚪ England Women Form & Trends
There is a feeling that this England squad is a little lightweight to go all the way in this edition of the Women’s European Championships. It is certainly not as strong as the squad that Sarina Wiegman led to the trophy back in 2023 so she will have to adapt and perhaps change some things tactically if England are to have a shot of retaining their trophy.
The main worry for England is that they are not able to compete with the elite nations in the competition, a fear that has been compounded by their opening game defeat against France as well as their defeat against Spain in the Nations League just before the tournament started. The loss against Spain in particular displayed how big the gap in quality and organisation is between the sides.
🟠 Netherlands Women Form & Trends
The Netherlands will be more than content with their start to the tournament as they claimed a comfortable 3-0 win over Wales in the opening game of the competition. They will be really optimistic about securing their qualification for the next round here in the first meeting between the sides since they faced off in the Nations League back in 2023.
The Netherlands actually have a similar issue to England in that they are more than comfortable against sides like Wales but can struggle against the more elite sides such as Spain, Germany, and France. This was shown in their recent Nations League campaign in which they finished second in the group, behind Germany, and conceded 10 goals across these games while scoring 11 themselves so we can expect them to be quite an entertaining side.
📊 England Women v Netherlands Women Head-to-Head Key Stats
These sides faced off in the Nations League back in 2023. The Netherlands won the initial meeting by a 2-1 scoreline before England took their revenge with a 3-2 victory over the Dutch.
