⚔️ Gameweek 13 Review – 81 Points (60 Average)
It’s all coming together! Finally, midfield is not solely carrying the team anymore, defence and attack have been activated.
Raya (1pt) was a slight let down but holding onto Robertson (6pts) paid off as was bringing in Dalot (6pts). Midfield smashed it as per usual with Palmer, Fernandes and Salah combining for a huge 49 points. Even Buonanotte (8pts) scored from the bench and though slightly frustrating to remain on the bench; in truth, I was never going to play him with the level if attackers I have in my team.
My strikers didn’t fully play to their maximum with Isak (1pt) coming off after 20 mins injured, and Cunha (2pts) blanking, but Evanilson (12pts, 2.6% owned) more than made up for it. A few players need moving on (Konsa, Keane) but the team is shaping up nicely for the busy period ahead.
📋 Gameweek 13 Transfer Recap
Each week so you know @FplVeteran is doing the demanding work for you, we revisit key decisions from last week’s review. This GW we revisit my transfers out.
From taking a huge risk in taking out top calibre and value for money players, it paid off again to a super high level. To my delight, another Haaland blank and my transfer out this week Lewis, with another disaster-class 1 pointer. Trent scored highly for what seems like the first time this season with an 8 pointer but overall a great set of transfers out.
Out | Points |
Rico-Lewis | 1 |
Haaland | 2 |
Alexander-Arnold | 8 |
Total | 11 |
✅ The Best 3 Transfers IN for Gameweek 14
🏴 Cole Palmer – Chelsea (£11.0m, 57%)
The second highest overall points scorer in FPL this season with bottom club, Southampton up next; yes please! He is significantly more expensive this season than last, but has still continued the high weekly scores, and interestingly enough is still value for money. This combined with the fact he could very well be many FPL managers captain in 4 of the next 5 GWs, leads many to transfer him in then set and forget.
Southampton, Brentford, Everton, Ipswich, Crystal Palace, Wolves, Bournemouth are a list of teams you just can’t ignore for any player, let alone one at the top of his game. Keep in mind, Palmer is not registered to play European matches so will only have one or two games per week, be fresher and maybe more importantly have a significantly less chance of becoming injured over a packed Christmas schedule. All signs point to not overthinking this one, at his high ownership level, just get him in, even if it requires a -4 hit.
🏴 Ollie Watkins – Aston Villa (£9.0m, 21.5%)
A surprise inclusion for most. Having blanked 4 of the last 5 GW’s, many would think against this except for two key points. Brentford have conceded at least two goals in 4 of their last 5 games (9 goals overall) and Watkins has a great goal scoring record against them, scoring 4 goals in the last 4 including a brace last time they played.
You know how we do things here by now and choosing players when they are not on many managers wish list is music and opportunity to our ears. Many players are only discussed as potential transfers once they have performed but let’s get on the train early and maximise that rank boost! Now there is one caveat to this: team setup. Some managers out there will have a super strong front three and in truth this isn’t worth taking a hit, but with many doubting Isak will manage to play due to injury and Haaland frustrating owners to rage transfer out, there is still opportunity to make the move.
🇸🇳 Nicolas Jackson – Chelsea (£8.1m, 25%)
The ‘Cat’ is on my transfer in list for the first time this season. Talking of preconceptions and old thoughts, it has taken me quite a while to alter my initial thoughts on Jackson who couldn’t hit a barn door to begin with but is now finishing exceptional well.
Granted, he still is not quite up to the level of the best strikers in the league, but with a goal in both games against Liverpool and Newcastle he is getting there. He flourishes against the bottom half placed teams in the league and up next is the lowest, Southampton. Any player with Cole Palmer as a teammate should be looked at as an option, mostly because of the damage he can inflict, again especially in the fixtures against the weaker teams.
Chelsea have only failed to score once in the last 15 games and 9 of these, they have scored 2 goals or more, with a couple of huge 6-2 and 4-1 victories. I expect the same this weekend. More often than not, Palmer and Jackson are involved in the majority of attacking returns and as Palmer is my captain this weekend, the opportunity of combining these two is exciting to say the least. I currently don’t own Jackson, but I am very close to including him, maybe you should follow suit?
❌ The Best 3 Transfers OUT for Gameweek 14
🏴 Jordan Pickford – Everton (£4.9m, 10%)
This goalkeeper has already made this list before, so this is more of a reminder. Again, talking of preconceptions, this is a classic example.
Over the seasons, Pickford has been a great cheap option for managers, with countless save points, penalty saves and man of the match performances, leading to a large amount of bonus points. Attention, this has now changed. Everton are not what they once were; a stalwart defensively strong team that grinds out 1-0 victories when required, quite the opposite.
Everton have kept three clean sheets this season but only scored in one of these. For Everton to stay up, they will need to take more risks in order to have even the slightest of chances in collecting three points. In an Everton side that is devoid of quality and quantity, taking risks only results in conceding goals and Pickford’s points decreasing. When Everton have not kept a clean sheet, he does not have more than 2 points, not even an extra save point. There are better options at better prices … and for better team so look elsewhere.
🏴 ANY asset– Southampton
This should be straightforward and by now common sense. I know many have thought a cheap defender for a newly promoted team is a good idea, and yes I include myself on that list but Southampton this season are a completely different beast. Often, you can find a cheap gem who most weeks keeps your bench warm but when required, steps up for a few points and is good value for money but this is NOT the team to apply this too.
Southampton are on course to be one of the worst teams EVER to play in the Premier League and currently with 5 points and 25 goals conceded from only 13 games, the signs don’t look promising. Yes, like many I looked at Tyler Dibling (£4.5m) as the youngster clearly has some talent, but the players he has around him, plain and simple are just not up to the standard required. This results in Dibling and any other asset like Harwood-Bellis, Archer and Downes becoming pointless to bring in and waste a spot on your team.
Those that have been reading my articles for a while now know I have been aggressively attacking Southampton and with 4 key players out of their upcoming fixture V Chelsea, ensure you have Palmer and at least one other Chelsea asset. This is the week everyone, including the most avid Saints fan accepts they are doomed for relegation and will take severe losses every single GW.
🇫🇷 Ibrahima Konate – Liverpool (£5.3m, 9.8%)
Another injury. At first Konate was a cheap way into the improved Liverpool backline that currently are looking the best bet for the title this season, but as our theme is this GW, things have changed. Konate missed the last game versus Man City and is now out for an unknown amount of time. Often we don’t get an update on a player and are slow in the uptake to change them, but Arne Slot has confirmed he will miss the next few weeks at least, so react and make that change.
Close to 500k managers have already made the change, so he will plummet in value by most likely at least £0.2M. Joe Gomez is a suitable side move but there are many more I prefer.
I already own Diogo Dalot (£5.2m) who I love for the attacking returns, but Man Utd’s fixtures aren’t the best. A better option still is the strong attacking pair of Gabriel (£6.2m) or Saliba (£6m) but I would go further afield and take a look at Marc Cucurella (£5m) at Chelsea. Currently they aren’t keeping many clean sheets but with the great fixture run starting this weekend that will change, and combined with his assist potential, is the opportunity to score big. Last game versus Aston Villa he assisted, kept a clean sheet and picked up 2 bonus for an 11-point haul. Remember, managers only look at players after they score big, lead from the front and set the trend.
Top Tip – Set and forget your next GW team to ensure you don’t miss out. With the amount of football over the festive period always being hectic, as too are the differing deadline days and times. When each GW is completed, open up the app and set your team up ready, even before you make any transfers. That way, when life becomes hectic and you forget to carry out your intended moves, at least your perfect 11 has been chosen, the captaincy has been given to the correct player and your bench is in the correct order.
🦸 Gameweek 14 Captaincy Selections
🏴 Cole Palmer – Chelsea (£11.0m, 57%)
He plays Southampton, is there much more to say? I jest, of course there is more to contemplate, but it is the obvious choice. Palmer we have seen, has the capability to score 4 goals a game, who’s to say he can’t do it again? Often, many decisions in FPL are straightforward and we over think, there is no need here; Ice Cold Cole Palmer will deliver!
Alternative Captain Options
Many players could score highly, so it’s a tough call. My mind is made up, but Cunha V Everton, Watkins V Brentford and Salah V Newcastle will still score well. But its strangely enough the most expensive player in the game that I am thinking of plumping for … if you own him.
Haaland has 5 goals in the last 4 games V Nottingham Forest, including a hattrick in one. Haaland is currently at a fairly low ownership of 47.5%, and the managers that still currently own him, have a chance to catch up on the leaders of their league. For sure, if you own him, you have to captain.
👁️ FPL Veteran’s Vision and Verdict
Slowly turning the screw! I love the fast pace of deadline days, double GW’s and hopefully many points. Due to the quick turnaround of GW’s, I will be quite passive with my team setup. With Robertson now back in the squad and Buonanotte scoring again I have less fires to put out though Konsa and Keane really need to be moved on, Isak too is beginning to grate on me.
I am especially strong in my front 7 attackers and with Veltman hopefully coming back into the side, my first 11 is ready to go. Only move I am contemplating is Mbeumo for Saka, I can’t ignore starboy’s form any longer, but due to my budget it would have to be for a hit; I think with Man Utd as opponents it’s not worth it.
