Flamengo v Chelsea

📅

Kick Off: Friday 20th June at 19:00

🏆

Competition: FIFA Club World Cup

Group D is starting to take shape with both Flamengo and Chelsea winning their opening games of the Club World Cup by 2-0 scorelines against LAFC and Esperance Tunis. Flamengo are set to be Chelsea’s biggest challenge in this group which they should otherwise navigate pretty comfortably without another European representative in the mix.

There are plenty of narratives here with Flamengo boasting former Blues Jorginho and Thiago Silva within their ranks as well as being managed by another former Chelsea man in Filipe Luis who has really got this side ticking - Flamengo have only lost one of their last 16 games.

Enzo Fernandez to have 1+ Shots on Target

Fernandez continues to be priced quite generously for a shot on target when considering his position change under Enzo Maresca and his record over the final few weeks of the season. Fernandez averaged 0.61 shots on target per 90 during the 24/25 Premier League season and 1.06 shots on target per 90 across his six appearances in the Conference League during the 24/25 season.

Fernandez came on and scored Chelsea’s second goal in their 2-0 win over LAFC to kick off this tournament. He made a run, which he has been making more regularly for Chelsea of late, arriving into the box late to get on the end of an excellent cross from Liam Delap, who also had a promising cameo off the bench. Fernandez is trusted in a more advanced role by Enzo Maresca as opposed to the various roles he was being asked to play under the tutelage of Mauricio Pochettino.

Fernandez registered more than double the number of goal contributions during the 24/25 season for Chelsea (22) compared to the 23/24 season (10), which perfectly demonstrates how he has become more impactful in the final third for this Chelsea side, especially as a goalscorer.

Luiz Araujo was the standout player for Flamengo in their opening game of the Club World Cup, registering a goal and an assist as Flamengo ran out comfortable 2-0 winners over Esperance Tunis. Araujo had two shots in the game with one of these attempts finding the target, Flamengo managed four shots on target overall. Araujo is averaging 1.11 shots on target per 90 across his 10 appearances in the Brazilian Serie A this season.

Flamengo committed 20 fouls in their opening game against Esperance Tunis, also managing to draw 19 fouls from the Tunisian side. This foul total was in a game that Flamengo were quite comfortable in, which suggests that it could be a similar number here against a Chelsea side that will test them more without the ball. Caicedo wasn’t fouled in Chelsea’s opening game of the Club World Cup but showed his ability to get stuck in by making the most tackles of any player on the pitch (4). Caicedo averaged 1.56 fouls won per 90 across his 38 appearances in the Premier League during the 24/25 season.

💻 Flamengo v Chelsea Form and Tactics

This will certainly be Chelsea’s toughest test in the group after seeing off LAFC by a 2-0 scoreline and a matchup against Esperance Tunis to come in the final group game, a side that Flamengo managed to turn aside quite comfortably by the same scoreline.

Chelsea were bright in their opening game, breaking the deadlock via Pedro Neto after an excellent ball through by Nicolas Jackson. Strikers providing assists appeared to be the theme of the day for the Blues, with Liam Delap also registering an assist off the bench to set up Enzo Fernandez’s goal, which wrapped up the victory for the Blues.

One aspect of the opening game worth noting from Chelsea’s performances was how tired they looked towards the end of the game, with key players like Caicedo and Cucurella looking particularly lethargic in the latter stages - this could prove decisive in the latter stages of the tournament. Chelsea were also pretty reckless in their opening game, as they had been throughout the 24/25 season; they received three yellow cards in the game.

Flamengo were convincing in their 2-0 win over Esperance Tunis in their opening game of the Club World Cup and never really looked out of control. It’ll be a more stern test here against Chelsea, but Flamengo have plenty of momentum and will be well organised under the tutelage of Filipe Luis, who has proven himself to be an effective manager during his time at Flamengo.

Chelsea could struggle to break Flamengo down in the early stages of this game, the Brazilian side have only conceded four goals in the Brazilian Serie A this season across their 11 fixtures in the division. We can expect Flamengo to lean on this defensive resilience to try and get something from the game; even a point would put them in an excellent position to qualify for the group.
