Over 2.5 France Goals

I almost fell off my chair when I saw that Didier Deschamps had selected a front four of Mbappe, Doue, Barcola and Olise against Ukraine. The France head coach is rarely this expressive with his team selection, and he should be just as bold here with there being opportunities for some of France’s more fringe attacking players with Dembele and Doue both out injured.

This is key as the French squad is so difficult to get into, and with the World Cup fast approaching there will be a lot of players that want to show Deschamps that they are worthy of a spot in the World Cup squad. France scored two goals against Ukraine but could have easily added a third with six of their 16 shots finding the target on that occasion.

Over 1.5 Iceland Cards

I expect France to be quite dominant here and that seems to be the overall feeling seeing as they are priced at just 1.06 to come away with a win here.

Iceland committed 12 fouls and were shown one yellow card in their 5-0 win over Azerbaijan last time out. Their foul numbers from that game in particular are quite high for a side that was quite dominant and had 71% of the ball.

We can anticipate that Iceland’s high foul count from that opening qualifying game will spill into this game now that they will be the side on the back foot.

France drew 10 fouls from Ukraine in their opening qualifying match, Ukraine didn’t receive a card on that occasion but Iceland are more likely to receive cautions seeing as the referee for this game, Antonio Nobre, averages 5.12 cards per game across his 114 total appointments.

🔵 France can gain control of Group D

France will be one of the favourites for the World Cup next summer should they successfully navigate their way through this qualifying group. This shouldn’t be too much of an issue for Didier Deschamps’ side seeing as the rest of the group is made up of Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Iceland making France clear favourites.

There has long been a cry to see more from this France side in the final third. Deschamps prioritising structure and control takes a bit of the shine away from this France side, but there were signs against Ukraine that he is willing to take the handbrake off just slightly in these qualifying matches.

🔴 Tough Assignment for Iceland

Iceland started their qualifying campaign with a statement 5-0 win over Azerbaijan who are the weakest side in the group. There’s a real opportunity for Iceland in this group, they’ll be in a dog fight with Ukraine to finish second with France expected to run away with top spot.

Iceland’s main achievement on the international stage came back in 2016 when they famously knocked out England in the European Championships. They haven’t been able to replicate that scale of achievement since, but this group represents their best chance of reaching a World Cup in recent years.

📊 France v Iceland H2H

The most recent meeting between these sides was back in 2019 with France running out 1-0 winners on that occasion.

Iceland have never beaten France in the five meetings the sides have contested.
