France travel to Iceland on Monday, hoping to firmly wrestle control of qualifying group D and secure their spot at the World Cup next summer. They’ve won all three of their games so far, conceding just one goal.

Iceland fell to a 5-3 defeat against Ukraine at home last time out, which has jeopardised their chances of finishing second in the group, with Ukraine now in a more comfortable position.

Fixtures for: Monday 13th October

Iceland v France

World Cup Qualifiers

19:45

Over 2.5 Goals

Over 2.5 goals landed when these sides met back in September as France ran out 2-1 winners, despite playing the final 20 minutes with 10 men - following Tchouameni’s sending off.

France have been very comfortable in qualifying so far, with three wins from their three matches. They’ve netted seven goals across these games and conceded just once, with two of these games seeing over 2.5 goals.

There may be more opportunities for Iceland here now that they are the home side, and they come into this game having seen eight goals against Ukraine last time out in a 5-3 defeat.

Iceland have seen over 2.5 goals in all three of their matches so far in qualifying, with the others being a 2-1 loss to France and a 5-0 win over Azerbaijan. The fact that Iceland have netted eight goals across their two home fixtures so far really aids this selection, as there is potential for them to cause France problems.

📈 Iceland v France Form & Stats

Didier Deschamps has opted for a slightly different squad for this international break, motivated by the various issues that some of France’s main attacking players are struggling with at the moment, namely Dembele and Doue of PSG.

This has seen Jean Phillipe Mateta earn his first-ever call-up to the France squad, as well as some other fringe players getting opportunities in what is the most competitive international squad in the world.

They ran out 3-0 winners over Azerbaijan in their initial game of this international break and are expected to be comfortable in victory here. Didier Deschamps has come under real scrutiny in recent months for France’s poor performances against some of the bigger nations, but their seamless run in qualifying has dampened the noise.

It may be the case that criticism of the head coach is a bit unfounded; he’s won 111 of his 172 games in charge of France - a win rate of 64%.

Iceland will have been really disappointed with their 5-3 defeat against Ukraine last time out. That match was their opportunity to rival Ukraine for second spot, but Ukraine’s 5-3 win means that Iceland are now outsiders to finish second in the group.
