Liverpool travel to face Frankfurt with Arne Slot desperate for a result that would bring an end to a run of four losses across all competitions.

Frankfurt haven’t been able to find form in recent weeks with just one win from their last five matches. They’ve been on the wrong and right side of a 5-1 result in the Champions League so far.

Both Teams to Score

Frankfurt’s matches are usually entertaining. They’ve seen BTTS in four of their last five matches across all competitions, with the exception being a 3-0 defeat to Bayern Munich, who are the strongest side in the Bundesliga, and also boast the best defensive record.

Frankfurt’s three home games in the Bundesliga have produced 15 goals (5.0 per game), with seven scored and eight conceded across these matches. They’ve also seen BTTS in both of their Champions League matches so far this term, winning 5-1 against Galatasaray but then falling to a defeat at the hands of Atletico Madrid by the same scoreline.

Liverpool are being forced into scoring a few goals in every game if they want to pick up wins, with how poor their backline has been in the early stages of the season. Arne Slot’s side have kept just two clean sheets across their 11 matches in all competitions so far this term, so the Reds are very vulnerable at the back right now, which is something that Frankfurt are sure to exploit with their immense scoring power.

Liverpool GK to Make 2+ Saves

Frankfurt are a very forward-thinking team and will look to take the game to Liverpool here. They drew three saves from Cakir in the Galatasaray net in their first Champions League game of the campaign and will feel confident in being the latest side to expose the issues that Liverpool are facing at the back.

Frankfurt are averaging 4.90 shots on target per game in the Bundesliga so far this term, which is a record that ranks sixth in the German top flight. This record rises when looking at their home matches with Frankfurt, managing five shots on target in their 5-1 win over Galatasaray. Liverpool allowed Manchester United to have four shots on target and draw two saves from Mamardashvilli in their most recent assignment.

Mamardashvilli has been called into action six times across his two appearances for Liverpool so far this season (3.00 per 90). He’s having to be more alert than usual with the issues that Liverpool are having in effectively organising their backline, which is something that should see the stand-in keeper at least twice here.

Cody Gakpo to have 1+ Shots on Target

Gakpo has been one of the more reliable Liverpool forwards over recent weeks, with the likes of Isak and Salah finding it difficult to find any form at the moment. He’s scored in each of his last two Premier League matches for Liverpool against Manchester United and Chelsea, as well as scoring in both of the Netherlands’ matches over the international break.

Gakpo has had 21 shots across his eight appearances in the Premier League so far this term (2.93 per 90) with five of these attempts finding the target (0.70 per 90). With Liverpool’s usual stars struggling for form and the moment, and new signings taking time to adjust, Gakpo can act as a reliable threat for Liverpool again in this Champions League matchup.

Gakpo has had one shot on target across his two appearances in the Champions League, with this effort coming in Liverpool’s 1-0 defeat to Galatasaray in their most recent Champions League assignment. Gakpo netted three goals across just four starts in the Champions League last season, managing eight shots on target across these appearances (1.96 per 90).

Can Uzun to have 2+ Shots

Everyone should be keeping an eye on Can Uzun in this game. The 19-year-old has registered eight goal contributions across his seven appearances in the Bundesliga so far this season and is a tremendous talent that will no doubt be picked up by an elite club in the coming seasons.

He’s already made an impact in the Champions League this term with a goal against Galatasaray in Frankfurt’s 5-1 win over the Turkish side. He’s had four shots in the Champions League overall (2.77 per 90), with Uzun also maintaining an excellent record when it comes to shots in the Bundesliga this term with 18 across his seven appearances (3.26 per 90).

One really notable metric from Uzun’s electric start to ten campaign is his xG. His chances have only generated an xG of 1.40, yet he has ended up with five goals in the Bundesliga so far. This would suggest that Uzun has been clinical in the early stages of the season, and he should have opportunities to extend this impressive record against a Liverpool side that are looking a bit sheepish at the back at the moment.

Over 3.5 Goals

Frankfurt’s recent matches have seen really high goal tallies. Four of their last five matches have seen 4+ goals, with the exception being a 3-0 loss against Bayern Munich, which can be forgiven, seeing as Vincent Kompany’s side are head and shoulders above the rest of the sides in the Bundesliga.

Liverpool’s defensive issues also point to goals here, with Arne Slot’s side only keeping two clean sheets across their 11 matches in all competitions so far this term. We can expect Frankfurt to make the most of this advantage and breach the Liverpool backline at least once, meaning Liverpool will need to score at least twice if they want to take something from the game.

Frankfurt’s three home games in the Bundesliga so far this season have produced 15 goals (5.0 per game). They’ve also seen 4+ goals in both of their Champions League matches so far, with a 5-1 win over Galatasaray followed up by a 5-1 defeat at the hands of Atletico Madrid, so this really could go either way for Frankfurt

Jonathan Burkardt to Score Anytime

Jonathan Burkardt is Frankfurt’s second top scorer so far this season, having netted four goals across his six Bundesliga appearances. He’s scored in both of Frankfurt’s Champions League matches so far against Galatasaray and Atletico Madrid, and will be keen to add Liverpool to that list here.

Burkardt netted a brace against Freiburg last time out as Frankfurt were held to a 2-2 draw away from home. That brace takes Burkardt’s tally to five goals across his last five appearances in all competitions for his club side.

Frankfurt signed Burkardt following an impressive season with Mainz. He netted 19 goals across all competitions in 30 appearances, with the bulk of these goals coming in the Bundesliga. He’s already shown that he can adapt to the level of the Champions League with goals in the early fixtures, and I’d back him to do the same again here and end up on the scoresheet.

Alexis Mac Allister be Shown a Card

Alexis Mac Allister is well overdue for a yellow card, having not yet picked one up this season. This is quite surprising when considering how combative the Argentine can be in the middle of the park for Liverpool - he averaged 2.14 fouls per 90 and collected six yellow cards in the Premier League last term.

Mac Allister picked up a further five cautions across his eight appearances in the Champions League. This away tie is the perfect environment for Mac Allister to pick up his first caution of the campaign.

His direct opponent here is likely to be Can Uzun, who is Frankfurt's top scorer so far this term and a really dangerous player at just 19. Uzun has won eight fouls across his seven Bundesliga appearances so far this season (1.45 per 90) and can tempt Mac Allister into making a few challenges.

📈 Frankfurt v Liverpool Form & Tactics

Frankfurt are a really intriguing side with plenty of young talent littered throughout the squad. Their games have been seeing really high goal counts this term, which tells us that they don’t really focus on the defensive side of the game and look to be as front-footed as possible.

Four of Frankfurt’s last five matches across all competitions have seen 4+ goals. It’s questionable as to whether or not this is an effective and sustainable strategy, seeing as Frankfurt have struggled for form in recent weeks, winning just one of these crazy end-to-end matches.

Liverpool's recent matches haven’t been as entertaining, but there’s just as much concern for Arne Slot with his side losing their last four matches, three of which were in away matches. There are a few reasons why it isn’t quite clicking at Liverpool. I personally think this is the effect of losing crucial players like Diaz and Trent in one window and replacing them with players that aren’t quite at the level to compete for the title.

Liverpool have picked up one win in the Champions League so far, with their last-gasp 3-2 win over Atletico Madrid at Anfield. I think Frankfurt's front-footed approach will actually end up suiting Liverpool with the attacking quality they have. You would expect that firepower to click at some point, and it may be an end-to-end game like this where we finally see it.

📔 Frankfurt v Liverpool Formation & Team News

Frankfurt tend to line up in a 4-2-3-1 with a focus on taking the game to the opposition. Dino Toppmoller wants his side to be on the front foot and doesn’t really mind if they give up chances as a result of their aggressive approach. Frankfurt inevitably end up conceding goals with this approach, but are confident enough to believe that they’ll outscore the opposition, which may not be the case when they’re up against the standard of Liverpool’s attackers.

Their main absentee is right back Elias Baum, but he has been out for a while, so Frankfurt don’t have any fresh injury concerns and can utilise their whole squad here. Can Uzun is the obvious player to watch for the German side, but I’d also keep an eye on Bayoha and Knauff if they get starts here - both talented wide players that can further exploit the issues that Liverpool are having in the fullback areas.

Liverpool have been lining up in a 4-2-3-1 but this isn’t working as smoothly as it was for Slot last season. The fullbacks are now a real concern; both Kerkez and Bradley/Frimpong are a shift away in style from the long-term duo of Robertson and Trent. This change was always going to be a bit awkward with the pair owning those positions for so long, but Liverpool have got their recruitment slightly wrong as the new options don’t look like they fit Slot’s style.

Alisson is the main miss for Liverpool here as he continues his recovery from an injury sustained in Liverpool’s game against Galatasaray. Leoni, Endo, and Bajectic are also expected to miss this game not none of those players would have been in contention to start here, so Slot has a pretty full squad to choose from.

📊 Frankfurt v Liverpool Key Stats

  • Liverpool have kept just two clean sheets across their 11 matches in all competitions.

  • Frankfurt have seen 3+ goals in each of their last five matches, with four of these games seeing 4+ goals.

  • Liverpool have lost their last four matches across all competitions.

  • Frankfurt have won 5-1 (v Galatasaray) and lost 5-1 (v Atletico Madrid) in the Champions League this season.
