Freiburg v Frankfurt

🗓️

Kick Off: Saturday 17th May at 14:30

🏆

Competition: Bundesliga

  • Five of the last six head-to-head clashes have seen both teams score

  • Freiburg have now recorded four wins and a draw across their last five matches

  • Frankfurt have drawn three of their last four, despite a kind run of matches (including Augsburg, Mainz, and St.Pauli)

Although a win for either side would guarantee 3rd position, that’s unlikely to be on the minds of either Freiburg or Frankfurt, who will instead be looking behind them, as Dortmund threaten to displace one of the pair from the top four, thus depriving them of Champions League football next season.

Just three points separate the trio, with Frankfurt leading the pack with 57 points, shortly trailed by Freiburg on 55 and Dortmund on 54.

As such, a draw would suffice for Frankfurt, sealing their 3rd place finish, although the same cannot be said for Freiburg.

With Dortmund flying, and rounding their season up against already-relegated Holstein Kiel, Freiburg must assume that only a win would guarantee them a spot in the Champions League next season.

Were this to be the result, Frankfurt would find themselves in a dangerous spot. Their goal difference is three higher than that of Dortmund, which is certainly not enough to afford them any additional comfort.

Beyond that, goals scored would be the subsequent tiebreak, and with Frankfurt trailing their opposition by three goals, they would likely fall at this hurdle should they fail to get a result on Saturday.

These teams have been pretty evenly matched throughout the season, and backing them to end this clash all square looks like value at 3.6. Three of Frankfurt’s last four matches have produced stalemates, and while they look the better of the two sides, their away record is poor this season (1.44 points per game vs 2 at home). This should counterbalance Freiburg's struggles against the league’s top sides, and hopefully result in a draw.

Another overpriced selection backing either side not to score two or more goals at 1.3. Since the start of the season, this selection has come home in 30 out of Freiburg’s 33 league games, and 13 of Frankfurt’s 16 away matches (26/33 overall). Between the pair, Frankfurt’s clash with Hoffenheim was the only game to have seen both sides create two or more expected goals.

🔴 Freiburg Recover to finish the Season off Strong

A dismal run of form from matchweeks 24 to 28 saw Freiburg pick up just 2 points from the 5 matches, at which point it certainly seemed as though all hopes for a top-four finish were dashed.

That said, they bounced back brilliantly and have now recorded four wins and a draw across their last five, only dropping points to Leverkusen, who managed two late goals to equalise things despite having been firmly second-best.

One notable constant in Freiburg’s season has been their inability to get results in clashes with Germany’s top sides.

Worryingly, they haven’t managed a single win against the current top six, recording four draws and seven losses over the season. Three of the four draws were in games they hosted, so they’ll be hoping their fans can encourage them once again against a tough Frankfurt side.

Inconsistencies Trouble Frankfurt Late on

Despite being unbeaten in five league games, in all honesty, Frankfurt probably should have wrapped things up a while ago.

Eintracht have slumped to three disappointing draws in their last four, despite a relatively straightforward run of matches, failing to take all three points from each of Augsburg, Mainz, and St.Pauli.

In retrospect, a single win over that period would have been enough to guarantee Frankfurt third place.

That said, an exhilarating 4-0 thumping of RB Leipzig mid-way through the run should raise spirits in the Frankfurt camp, even if it were partially courtesy of a Leipzig red-card in the 50th minute (three of the four goals came after).

📊 Freiburg v Frankfurt Head-to-Head Key Stats

The head-to-head record between these sides offers little to help us determine a likely result, although it does tell us something about how the game might play out.

The reverse fixture was the first time Frankfurt and Freiburg had met under their current managers, Dino Toppmoller and club legend Julian Schuster.

On that occasion, Frankfurt were much the better side, coming from behind to win 4-1 with the xG reading 2.47-0.52 in their favour.

Looking a bit further back, it’s been a mixed bag, with the last six producing two Frankfurt wins, one Freiburg win, and three draws.

Meetings between these sides tend to be enticing affairs, with both teams scoring in five of those games, although only once did both sides find the back of the net on two or more occasions.
