Seven runners line up for this competitive Listed event over 1m2f despite the presence of the 118-rated favourite Addeybb from the red-hot William Haggas stable. The Pivotal gelding made a pleasing reappearance when third behind Bay Bridge in the G3 Brigadier Gerard Stakes over course and distance. He’s expected to improve sharply with that run under his belt and sets a clear standard, some 9lb ahead of his rivals on the figures. His cause has been aided by the recent rainfall in the Esher area but one who can bridge the gap may be the Sir Michael Stoute-trained REGAL REALITY. The Intello seven-year-old was also returning from an absence when an encouraging fourth in the Listed Wolferton Stakes at Royal Ascot over this distance, keeping on strongly at the line, finishing just behind another rival horse in this, Harrovian. He should take a step forward with fitness on side and boasts excellent course form, including a track and trip success in Group Three company, and ran third in the G1 Coral-Eclipse behind Enable in 2019. He could be something or a forgotten horse and makes plenty of appeal in this affair.

This staying handicap over 1m6f is a tricky affair on paper with numerous chances. Recent course and distance winner, High Wells, is respected after a 4lb rise in the weights. He could be taken on for the lead by the consistent Happy from the Charlie and Mark Johnston stable. The latter is a tenacious type who is likely to attempt to make all the running from a good draw. There is the chance of these two taking each other on from a long way out, hopefully setting a decent pace to aim at. That will ideally suit the selection – DUKE OF VERONA – an unexposed four-year-old who stayed on well into third over this trip at Salisbury last time. The stiff finish is likely to play to his strengths and the stable had a timely winner at Yarmouth on Thursday.

The William Knight-trained CHECKANDCHALLENGE is on somewhat of a comeback mission following running down the field in the G1 2000 Guineas at Newmarket in May. That was his first effort on turf following an impressive pair of victories on the AW, including an effortless Listed success at Newcastle. He ran ahead of a trio of triple-digit rated rivals that day, indicating his classy profile and ran encouragingly in the Guineas despite a heavy defeat. He travelled powerfully on the unfavoured stands’ side and was eased once his chance had gone. There could be plenty of improvement to come on handicap debut and is worth catching this time around.

This ultra-competitive handicap over 1m4f is likely to be run at a strong pace in conditions set to be on the soft side of good, with some showers forecast prior to racing on day three on this fixture. SECRET SHADOW catches the eye from an official handicap mark of 85, following a promising reappearance third at Goodwood. The sixth has subsequently won from that race and the selection looks capable of taking a step forward with an unexposed profile. She has scored twice over longer distances, which will benefit her if this develops into a truly run affair.

PICUAL won with plenty to spare on handicap debut at Nottingham over this distance. She went up 4lb after that cosy success, but could have arguably been raised higher, giving the impression she created after winning from a slow tempo throughout. The daughter of Lope De Vega is bred to be smarter than a handicapper as her dam is a half-sister to French Derby winner New Bay out of 1m Listed winning half-sister to 1m6f Group Two scorer Bellamy Cay. There are a whole host of potential improvers in this contest, with four last-time-out winners, but there is a strong chance that the selection will have too much for her opposition up the incline to the winning post.
