Fulham v Leeds United Cheat Sheet
Fulham v Leeds United
After 5 losses in a row, Fulham got back to winning ways with an impressive 3-1 victory away at Everton. After their recent poor run of form, Fulham have dropped to 10th and the European spots look out of reach for them. Mitrovic has been a pivotal player for Fulham this season and his ban was always going to make things harder for Fulham. Aswell as Mitrovic missing, Fulham will be without Dan James who can’t play against his parent club, he was excellent against Everton with a goal and an assist and may be more of a miss for Fulham than you might expect.
Leeds fans are not at all happy with their recent results, they have lost 4-1, 5-1 and 6-1 all in their last 4 matches but for now they are still 2 points above the relegation zone. Leeds have picked up very important wins against Wolves and Nottingham Forest recently and a win here would be another massive step in the right direction. Bamford should be at least on the bench here, but he is likely not fit enough to start. Gnonto should have regained match sharpness after his injury and will likely be selected to start, this will be a massive boost for Leeds.
Leeds are constantly involved in high scoring matches, after both teams failed to score in either of Javi Gracia’s first 3 matches, both teams have scored in all of Leeds’ last 6 matches. Leeds know they need points aswell and will be chasing goals and wins, they will likely attack throughout and are fully capable of scoring goals. However, 20 goals conceded in their last 6 matches also shows that they are not very good defensively. Fulham have been involved in high scoring matches all season and even with the loss of Mitrovic, they are still finding ways to score goals. They have scored at least once in 9 of their last 11 matches and conceded at least once in 7 of their last 8 matches. Fulham have little to play for at this stage of the season and will just be looking to play the best open attacking football they can, which will see them score goals but will also leave space for Leeds to attack into.
Fulham allow the 3rd most shots on target per 90 and against an attacking Leeds side they will concede plenty here. One of Leeds’ most dangerous players recently has been Luis Sinisterra. The Colombian has averaged 1.11 shots on target per 90 this season and has arguably been Leeds’ best player under Gracia. Sinisterra has 5 shots on targets in his last 3 matches and has averaged a shot on target every 54.6 minutes in games since Gracia took over. Opposition left wingers have had at least 1 shot on target in 4 of Fulham’s last 5 matches, it is clearly a position Fulham struggle to defend against, meaning Sinisterra looks a good pick for a shot on target.
With no Mitrovic and also no Dan James in this match, it will be down to other Fulham attackers to be their attacking threats and I think this is where Pereira will have an impact. Pereira has averaged 1.99 shots per 90 so far this season but since Mitrovic’s ban he has stepped up. Fulham have played 3 matches without Mitrovic and Pereira’s shot numbers in each game have been 4, 6 and 4. Pereira has been one of Fulham’s key players all season but it is clear that he has stepped up without Mitrovic in the team. He also had these high shot numbers in matches against Everton, West Ham and Bournemouth, 3 teams at a very similar level to Leeds. Overall, Pereira looks good value for 3 or more shots.
Leeds have averaged 5.32 corners per 90 so far this season while Fulham concede an average of 5.37 a match. Furthermore, since Gracia took over as Leeds manager, Leeds have over 3.5 corners in 6 of their 8 league matches. The only matches where Leeds failed to have over 3.5 corners were in their matches away at Arsenal and their home match against Crystal Palace when they were thrashed. Even in matches at Chelsea and at home against Brighton and Liverpool, Leeds managed over 3.5 corners. Fulham have conceded at least 4 corners in 12 of their last 14 league games. Fulham have little to play for while this game is of great importance for Leeds so they will push forward and likely win a good number of corners, therefore they should have at least 4 corners here.
