Germany v Netherlands
📅
Kick Off: Monday 14th October at 19:45
🏆
Competition: UEFA Nations League
On Monday night, it is a repeat of the 1974 World Cup final as Germany take on the Netherlands, this time in UEFA Nations League action. The pair met as recently as last month when the shares were spoiled in a four-goal thriller in Amsterdam.
Munich is the destination this time around, and it is advantageous for Germany in the group given they currently hold first place. They sit two points ahead of their opponents, and this League A Group 3 encounter puts together two unbeaten nations in this competition this season.
⭐ Germany v Netherlands Best Bets
These two clubs played each other only last month in an epic 2-2 encounter. Taking the group state into account as well, there is no reason why another exciting contest should not play out.
Under Julian Nagelsmann, Germany’s matches have averaged 3.125 goals, and 62.50% of those featured both teams scoring. Missing some key players through injury will no doubt contribute to another game of chaos involving the Germans. The Netherlands are currently on a five-game streak of matches also including each team scoring. Those would also average a whopping 3.80 goals.
The absence of their suspended centre-back Virgil van Dijk undoubtedly weakens them defensively. However, they always play to win and they ideally need to do so if winning the group is what they are chasing.
🔍 Germany v Netherlands Players to Watch
🟠 Cody Gakpo
This really should be an open game with plenty of chances at either end. Neither outfit have been the most reliable defensively for a while in terms of clean sheets, so someone like Gakpo should enjoy this challenge. Being the home side, Germany will of course push to win, but it will open up counter-attacking opportunities for someone such as the pacey Liverpool winger to expose.
Since the start of Euro 2024, the former PSV forward has averaged 2.44 shots per game for his country. 50% of those would actually work the opposition goalkeeper, as well as a total of four goals. In fact, only in two of those matches did he fail to have a strike hit the target. Dutch boss Ronald Koeman sees him as one of their main offensive threats these days, so he should see plenty of the ball.
⚪ Denis Undav
Germany suffered some injury withdrawals from key attacking players such as Kai Havertz and Jamal Musiala, which has opened the door for someone such as Deniz Undav to make a greater impact on the international scene. He certainly did that last week when netting both goals in the 2-1 away victory over Bosnia & Herzegovina.
The former Brighton striker also found the back of the net when facing the Netherlands last month. This was the start of his run of scoring eight over his last eight appearances for club and country. Three goals over his last two caps are making it hard for Nagelsmann to ignore him, especially as those three goals from only six shots prove his striking accuracy.

💻 Germany v Netherlands Form and Tactics
When playing one another last month, it was Germany who enjoyed the greater possession (60-40), despite the Netherlands being the home team. On average, Julian Nagelsmann’s side have enjoyed an average of 63.33% possession over their UEFA Nations League campaign to date. As for the Netherlands, their figure reads as 63%, making both nations virtually side-by-side. On that basis, Monday’s match should be an even affair.
Germany are on an eight-game streak in all competitions of winning the xGF battle, despite failing to win three of those fixtures. On the flip side, the Netherlands have been second-best in xGF in three of their previous five overall. In the previous head-to-head meeting last month, which ended 2-2, it would be the Germans that prevailed on the xGF count on that occasion; 2.62 – 1.93. Since the start of 2024, Germany are averaging 7.25 corners per game and Ronald Koeman’s outfit are slightly down on that with 5.38. Monday’s home side reached ten corners in their Amsterdam encounter earlier in the group stage. Also, despite claiming more points, it is Germany who have committed more fouls compared to the Netherlands, with the average either way reading 11.67 – 8.34 in UEFA Nations League action this season.

🏁 Germany v Netherlands Ref Watch
- Referee: Slavko Vinčić
- Slovenian Slavko Vinčić is a high-profile referee given he officiated the UEFA Champions League final and one of the Euro 2024 semi-finals last season. Over 2023/24 overall, the 44-year-old gave only two penalties across his 27 matches that covered eight different competitions. An average of 4.07 cards awarded at that time suggests he is not afraid to lay down the law. A red card given to Germany’s Leroy Sane in an international friendly with Austria is maybe something the Germans may bring to his attention on Monday.
- Vinčić is still settling into this season having only commanded five matches, however, he has already met 50% of his penalties awarded from the previous season. This came in the last match he refereed, which was in the Saudi Arabia Pro League. He is yet to dish out his first red card, although his average cards awarded figure has dipped slightly to 3.80.
- This official is five matches short of refereeing 400 games in all competitions, in a career spanning some 15 years. His career average yellow card rate stands at 4.07 per match and for reds, it is 0.10. Over the summer in the European Championships, the Yugoslavian-born referee awarded an average of 25.33 fouls per match.
