🏆
Competition: Serie A
The 2023/24 Serie A champions, Inter Milan, and Europa League winners, Atalanta, face off at San Siro in this Friday night’s standout European football clash.
La Dea have lost Teun Koopmeiners, to Juventus, and Juan Musso, to Atletico Madrid, this week but have reacted with the additions of Juan Cuadrado, Rui Patricio and Odilon Kossounou to keep things fresh.
Inter are unsurprisingly strong favourites but Gian Piero Gasperini’s men are known for causing upsets at this point.
Inter v Atalanta Best Bets
➡️ Marcus Thuram to have 1+ shots on target @ 1.30 with Paddy Power
➡️ Marten De Roon to commit 2+ fouls @ 1.91 with Paddy Power
There are a few really nice value selections, especially in the individual markets which we’ll take you through below.
Marcus Thuram to register 1+ shot on target @ 1.30 looks generous given he’s already racked up five shots on target and has looked far and away Inter’s sharpest player so far.
It’s well acknowledged amongst Serie A fans that while highly effective, Marten De Roon has been known to slip up occasionally. Last season he averaged 1.5 fouls per 90 but he’s since taken it up a notch, sinning four times against Lecce and three times against Torino. Given how much he’ll likely have to do to contain Inter’s midfield, 1.91 to commit 2+ fouls looks a tidy bit of value.

📊 Inter Form and Stats
Inter bounced back from their disappointing 2-2 draw with Genoa in style, comfortably triumphing 2-0 over Lecce. The chances came thick and fast and while Matteo Darmian and Hakan Çalhanoğlu were able to capitalise, Thuram and Marko Arnautovic both missed big opportunities which they arguably should have converted.
In the expected goals department, Inter were back to their typically dominant ways, accumulating 2.48 and allowing Lecce just 0.34. Indeed, the Nerazzurri did not concede a single chance with an associated xG value of more than 0.06.
It should be a safe assumption that their initial defensive woes against Genoa represented the exception rather than the rule. Last season Inter had the best defence in Europe conceding a mere 22 goals across the season, just about pipping Bayer Leverkusen, 24, to the top spot.
📊 Atalanta Form and Stats
For Atalanta, it was a day to forget as they slumped to a 2-1 defeat against Torino in a match they would have expected a lot more from.
Offensively they created a plethora of chances, accumulating 3.09 xG; the biggest opportunity was surely Mario Pasalic’s missed penalty. The Croatian also arguably should have scored in the 58th minute when the net was left gaping following a smart save from a corner, but his header was straight at the keeper. The Croatian wasn’t the only one guilty of squandering opportunities with Mateo Retegui hitting the woodwork from close range too.
Although Gasperini hardly sets up Atalanta in a defence-oriented manner, alarm bells will still be ringing at the 4.38 expected goals they’ve allowed in their two matches so far. As of now, they’ve been fortunate that only two have found the back of the net but that’s not to say it’s sustainable, particularly coming up against Inter Milan and Lautaro Martinez.
All in all, Atalanta’s form is difficult to gauge given the world of difference between their opening 4-0 thrashing of Lecce, and their more recent defeat to Torino. The only constant has been Matteo Retegui being in and amongst the goals. After scoring a brace in his Atalanta debut, he also made his way onto the scoresheet against Torino, looking bright on both occasions.
⚔️ Inter v Atalanta Head-to-Head
Predictably, clashes between these sides have been exciting affairs in recent years with Inter tending to get the better of their rivals. The Nerazzurri have won each of the last five showings; in fact, to find the last time Atalanta got the better of Inter, you have to go all the way back to 2018, 13 matches ago.
Last time out, Inter demolished Gian Piero Gasperini’s men in a 4-0 thrashing at the San Siro. There were four different goalscorers on that occasion, with Darmian, Lautaro Martinez, Federico Dimarco and Davide Frattesi all finding a way onto the scoresheet.
Betting on Atalanata for goals is always a sensible choice but this fixture in particular has produced entertainment of the highest degree in recent years. The last four league clashes have seen 17 goals produced, an average of 4.25 per game, with both sides scoring in three of them.
