This is a huge game for Ireland, as they have the chance to keep themselves in the hunt for qualification to a first World Cup since 2002.

It is a tough ask to go to Hungary and get a win, but the Irish are buoyant after their magnificent win over Portugal, and have given themselves an opening.

Both Teams to Score @ 1.95

It is difficult for the bookmakers to price the circumstances of this match, and I think that makes this both teams to score price quite generous.

In usual circumstances, I would agree with BTTS No being the favourite in this market, but the fact that Ireland have to go out and win it, and that Hungary also need to win if they are to qualify automatically, means that, for me, there should be more of an open, ding-dong feel to the match.

Ireland showed perfectly on Thursday night that they are eminently capable of hitting teams on the break, and that is certainly something that is on the cards here.

Hungary have kept clean sheets against Armenia in this campaign, but outside of that, they have conceded twice to Ireland, and five to Portugal across two matches, so they have been far from watertight. Their data over a larger sample size also shows that they score 1.38xG and concede 1.67xG over their recent Nations League campaign, plus their current World Cup campaign. Again, demonstrating that there are weaknesses in this Hungarian defence.

Troy Parrott Over 1.5 Shots @ 1.80

This is a bet based on Parrott's club form, alongside what happened on Thursday night at the Aviva Stadium.

Parrott hit three shots on the break against Portugal, scoring the all important opening goal. This is surely enough to finally cement his place at the tip of the team for Ireland, as when the impact against Portugal is combined with his work for AZ in the Netherlands, he looks to be the best bet for goals for Ireland.

Parrott has been a shot machine for AZ. He is averaging a massive 4.35 shots per 90 for his club this season, so he is full of confidence, and with Ireland needing a win here, they will be looking to get Parrott the ball in dangerous areas whenever possible.

Finn Azaz Over 0.5 Fouls Committed @ 1.83

Finn Azaz is another player who will have surely given himself a start in this match after producing his best display in an Ireland shirt, alongside many others, on Thursday night.

He will be dangerous for shots and goals as well, but it is his fouls record that interests me here.

Azaz has averaged 0.96 fouls per 90 in an Ireland shirt so far, but this has taken a step up recently. He has committed at least one foul in each of his last four starts for Ireland, including two against Armenia.

Despite this recent consistency of fouling, Azaz remains one of the biggest priced Irish players to commit a single foul.

I am also expecting an extra intensity to this match, given everything that is on the line for both teams.

Over 3.5 Ireland Corners @ 2.00

Not to stick too hard on a theme, but this seems a good price on a team that needs a win versus a team who could also need a win to progress.

Corners are often a tricky market to gauge and do rely somewhat on game state, but we know that Ireland need a win here, so we know that they will need shots on goal and some degree of proximity to the Hungarian goal.

Hungary do tend to concede corners on a regular basis. The Armenia games are something of an exception, putting those aside, 10 of their last 11 other internationals have seen Hungary's opponents beat this line.

Ireland have themselves won five and six corners in their last two internationals, and in a must-win situation like this, should be looking for similar here.

📈 Hungary v Ireland Form & Stats

Hungary have picked up the points that they would have expected to in this campaign. They won both matches against Armenia, picked up a point in Ireland, drew at home to higher ranked Portugal, and lost the return fixture. This leaves them a point ahead of Ireland, and two behind Portugal going into this match.

Technically, a win could put them top of the group, but in reality, Portugal should beat Armenia.

Hungary should be slightly concerned about their defensive record. They have conceded seven in three matches against Ireland and Portugal, and they rank 31st out of 54 in UEFA qualification for xGA.

Ireland come into this match with fewer points than Hungary, but with a lot more optimism about their game. This primarily comes from that recent home win over Portugal, their first against a top 10 ranked team in a competitive international since a 1-0 win over Germany in 2015. However, they have lost both away games in this campaign so far, but that can be balanced with away wins in Finland and Bulgaria in the Nations League.

Ireland rank mid-range of all UEFA qualifiers in most metrics, but interestingly rank third in accurate crosses per match, with 8.0 per match. They are also third for yellow cards given.

📔 Hungary v Ireland Formation & Team News

Hungary have been using a 4-3-3 shape in recent matches, which is a slight deviation from the 4-2-3-1 they used in Ireland.

Barnabas Varga has cemented his position as Hungary's #9, Varga has a great European record for Ferencvaros and that is recently translating into international goals as well. Callum Styles has also become a regular in the team alongside Liverpool's star Dominik Szoboszlai. There are no suspensions for Hungary.

It would be a surprise to see any changes to the Ireland team given how the match against Portugal went, but Jayson Molumby and Ryan Manning are back from suspension. Manning may come back in place of Liam Scales.

Manning would play left wing back in Hallgrimsson's 3-4-2-1, which he has favoured of late. Chieo Ogbene is likely to have made the right side #10 position his own now, whilst Finn Azaz will play the other role. Seamus Coleman will be pushing to finish his distinguished Irish international career with a huge tournament.
