Bolton Wanderers v Plymouth Argyle
Bolton Wanderers are far too short at home to Plymouth Argyle this weekend. Ian Evatt’s men have put together a decent run lately and they have been rated highly by the market all season, but they are performing like a side who will have to battle it out till the final few games of the season to stay in the top six, rather than cementing a spot or pushing up towards the top three.
The Trotters won 3-0 at Barnsley in their last match, which on the face of it is an incredible result, but the Tykes were down to ten from the 11th minute when the score was 0-0, so I am voiding the scoreline in preparing for this fixture.
Morgan Whittaker being recalled by Swansea City is an enormous blow for the Pilgrims, but they have players waiting in the wings to replace him and it may even increase motivation in the short term. Ryan Hardie will likely pick up more regular starts than he has done so far this term, and he along with Niall Ennis got on the scoresheet in a 2-0 win in the reverse fixture.
Cambridge United v Bristol Rovers
Bristol Rovers are quietly one of the best attacking sides in League One.
Despite losing Elliot Anderson from the forward line that took them up from League Two last term, Joey Barton’s men are still seriously potent in the final third. The Gas rank fourth on goals per game and the sixth highest for season-long expected goals (xG) for.
Aaron Collins, Josh Coburn, John Marquis and Ryan Loft, with Antony Evans and Luke McCormick in attacking midfield roles, possibly in utilising all five substitutions, will be a lot for Cambridge United to deal with even at the Abbey Stadium.
Mark Bonner’s U’s have won just one of their last eight in the league, and are sitting two points above the relegation zone as a result. Bonner is probably regretting not taking the managerial role at Rotherham United that was offered to him earlier in the season.
Ever the cautious punter I am still looking to keep more than one result onside, which is pointing towards a shorter price in this encounter, but it is one that we will not get to take advantage of for much longer, if the Gas continue to creep towards the play-off picture.
