Doncaster Rovers v Tranmere Rovers
Inconsistent Doncaster Rovers take on a Tranmere Rovers side who have turned a corner over recent weeks.
It has been a disappointing season so far for Donny and they find themselves down in 15th position in the table which is poor considering their aim was promotion. They were beaten 1-0 at home by Hartlepool United over the weekend and pressure is mounting on their boss Danny Schofield. Speaking after that loss, he said it was a ‘tough one to take’ and he will be desperate to see his team start picking up more points but it isn’t looking likely at the moment. On the injury front, defenders Adam Long and Ollie Younger are currently sidelined which is a blow and leaves the club short of players at the back, with current options Tom Anderson and Ro-Shaun Williams unable to stop 10 goals going in against them in the last five league outings, which is an average of two a game. Doncaster aren’t playing well right now and are winless in their last three matches which has seen them slip down the table, scoring just once in those games. Their confidence will be low and they won’t fancy their chances of getting back to winning ways.
Tranmere Rovers went toe-to-toe with high flyers Stockport County last time out and were unlucky to lose 3-2, with striker Kane Hemmings and winger Kieron Morris getting their goals. They would have levelled in stoppage time if it wasn’t for an impressive save by Hatters goalkeeper Ben Hinchcliffe to deny them a point and their manager Micky Mellon said he didn’t think there was ‘anything’ between the two teams which shows his side can compete with the stronger teams in the league. The Whites delved into the transfer market on deadline day to land Newcastle United midfielder Jay Turner-Cooke on loan and the promising 19-year-old is in line to make his debut this Tuesday and he will add more competition and depth to Mellon’s options in the middle of the park alongside the likes of Chris Merrie, Lee O’Connor and fellow recent recruit Regan Hendry from Forest Green Rovers. Despite losing to Stockport, Tranmere are back in form now and had lost just once in six going into their trip to Edgeley Park so they will be eager to get back to winning ways to boost their hopes of a push for the play-offs.
Crewe Alexandra v Leyton Orient
Struggling Crewe Alexandra are in for another tricky test as they welcome table toppers Leyton Orient.
The Railwaymen can’t buy a win at the moment and were thumped 3-0 at home to Grimsby Town over the weekend. They didn’t have a shot on target in that one and have slipped down to 18th place in League Two. Their boss Lee Bell has said it was a ‘really long afternoon’ for his players and their upcoming clash will be even tougher based on the league table. Crewe are lacking that cutting edge up front which is mainly due to attacking pair Courtney Baker-Richardson and Chris Long still being out injured and new boys Elliot Nevitt and David Amoo, who both joined in January from Tranmere Rovers and Stevenage respectively, will take a while to adapt to life with their new club. The Cheshire side have won just once in their last nine games in all competitions and their fans are growing frustrated at the lack of progress on and off the pitch with most signs pointing towards another loss in their upcoming clash. They have also won just once in their last six at the Mornflake Stadium and are finding it tough to play in front of their own fans.
Leyton Orient remain at the summit after their 1-0 win over AFC Wimbledon last time out courtesy of midfielder George Moncur’s second-half goal. That result again proved their ability to grind out victories and they will be looking for the same again this week. Speaking after their latest triumph, manager Richie Wellens said he felt his side are ‘back’ now after a few disappointing results and will hope his players can build on that three points by making it back-to-back wins. On the selection front, attacker Paul Smyth is a doubt after missing out against the Dons but the O’s have a whole host of top quality options in his position such as Charlie Kelman, Theo Archibald, Aaron Drinan and recent addition Kieran Sadlier, who joined from Bolton Wanderers last week. The London club have been the best team in the league this term and have won 18 of their 29 matches so far, scoring 37 goals and letting in just 17, which is the best defensive record in the division, so they should have too much quality for a poor Crewe outfit.
