Leeds United v Manchester United Cheat Sheet
Leeds United v Manchester United
Manchester United welcomed Leeds to Old Trafford midweek for what was an entertaining clash. The visitors stormed into an early lead and caused Ten Hag’s side a number of problems by pressing them high up the pitch.
Casemiro was a big miss as Fred was caught in possession on numerous occasions in deeper areas. Manchester United are likely to take a different approach in this game but expect another entertaining affair as Leeds look to pull away from the relegation battle.
Leeds are still looking to appoint a permanent manager after Jesse Marsch was relieved of his duties. The American was brought in to help the club avoid the drop last season. His successor will be given the same brief this season and the interim coaching staff could do them a big favour by securing three points on Sunday.
Meetings between these sides have generally been goal fests since Leeds returned to the Premier League under Marcelo Bielsa. The only exception was the 0-0 draw near the end of the 2020/21 season. Despite the goalless draw, the last five matches between these sides are averaging 4.8 goals per game. This jumps to six goals per game if you exclude that draw. Both teams to score has also landed in four of the five head-to-heads.
Leeds are averaging 1.5 goals per game at Elland Road this season and have only failed to score in three of their league matches at home. Man United have kept just one clean sheet in their last eight away league matches. They also look much more vulnerable without Casemiro in the side, who remains suspended for this game after his red card against Crystal Palace.
Ten Hag’s team have scored in every away game they have played since the 4-0 defeat against Brentford. The team have progressed a great deal since that game and are a much more potent attacking threat. Since the World Cup, Man United have scored in all of their league matches and are averaging two goals per game.
Weston McKennie made his first start for Leeds on Wednesday since joining from Juventus. He made three fouls and was booked. Two of those fouls were against Fred and he made a wild lunge trying to beat Garnacho to the ball. The third of his fouls in the match resulted in a small melee involving a a few players from each team. His fiery nature and the atmosphere at Elland Road makes him a prime candidate for fouls in this match.
Over the course of his career, McKennie is averaging 1.7 fouls per game. He is likely to line up as one of Leeds’ two deeper midfield players. The USA international will be tasked with shielding the defence and he is likely to be busy against a Man United side that have several quick players who like to dribble with the ball.
Marcus Rashford is the man in form for Manchester United. He is now fifth in the Premier League top scorer charts after a stellar run since the World Cup. Rashford also looked a threat in front of goal for England but he was unable to earn himself a starting berth in the crucial game against France.
Rashford is averaging 3.5 shots per game in the Premier League since the restart. He had four shots when these sides met on Wednesday and found the back of the net. Man United are still looking for a solution to their long term striker problem so Marcus remains the clubs biggest goal threat.
Marcus didn’t start either game against Leeds last season. He missed the meeting at Old Trafford through injury and was benched by Ralf Rangnick at Elland Road. However, in Leeds’ first season back in the Premier League, Rashford managed 3 and 4 shots in those matches.
