Liverpool v Brentford
📅
Kick Off: Sunday 25th August at 16:30
🏆
Competition: Premier League
📺
Watch Live: Sky Sports
Arne Slot takes charge of a Premier League fixture at Anfield for the first time on Sunday when Liverpool welcome Thomas Frank’s Brentford to Merseyside.
The Reds opened their account for the new 2024/25 campaign with a comfortable 2-0 triumph at Ipswich last weekend and overcame a particularly tricky test with top marks. Slot will hope that sailing is just as smooth against Brentford.
Brentford eked out a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace in their opener, though their record at Anfield makes for grim reading and they have been priced as massive 10.00 underdogs to win an away fixture at Liverpool for the first time since 1937.

Liverpool v Brentford Best Bets
➡️ Liverpool (-1) handicap @ 1.62 with Paddy Power
➡️ Diogo Jota to score anytime @ 2.20 with Paddy Power
Unsurprisingly, Liverpool offer little value as an option in the match result markets this week with the Reds priced as short as 1.20 to start the new campaign with two wins from two at Brentford’s expense.
However, applying a -1.0 handicap to the hosts makes for a more attractive alternative at 1.62. Liverpool have one of the Premier League’s most ruthless frontlines and they covered a one-goal handicap in their two meetings with Brentford last term, despite both games being relatively closely-contested.
Last term, Liverpool were beaten just once in the league at Anfield and in their 15 victories on home soil, they covered a one-goal handicap on 13 separate occasions. With a determination to deliver a win in Arne Slot’s first league fixture at Anfield adding extra motivation, a convincing Reds performance looks like a possibility here.
Diogo Jota also offers excellent value at 2.20 in the anytime goalscorer stakes. The diminutive Portugues forward looks primed for a productive Premier League campaign and he hit the ground running with a well-taken effort at Ipswich last weekend.
The 27-year-old notched in last season’s corresponding fixture against Brentford and has scored three career goals against the Bees overall, including two for Liverpool in the Premier League and one for Wolves in the Championship.

📊 Liverpool Form and Stats
Liverpool were the picture of professionalism at Portman Road last weekend when they diffused an enthusiastic atmosphere and eased to a 2-0 win over newly-promoted Ipswich Town.
Diogo Jota, who carried his fine pre-season form into his first competitive outing of the campaign, broke the deadlock on the hour mark before Mohamed Salah added a second five minutes late to become the first player ever to score nine times on the opening weekend of a Premier League season.
Liverpool clocked 2.60 in xGA, which was the highest figure posted by any team on matchday one, while just two sides fared better than the Reds in terms of xGA (0.50).
Pool’s attacking trident of Jota, Salah and Luis Diaz looked razor-sharp in Suffolk and accounted for ten of Liverpool’s 18 attempts between them. Only Southampton (19) racked up more shots than Slot’s Reds across the weekend.
We’ve done plenty to highlight Liverpool’s penchant for fouling in recent seasons and they were are it again at Ipswich, committing a whopping 18 to Town’s nine, despite controlling 62% possession. Look out for that defensive tactic again on Sunday.
The Reds can approach this weekend’s task with plenty of confidence. They haven’t lost their first home game of a Premier League campaign in any of the last 20 seasons.
📊 Brentford Form and Stats
Brentford have routinely been fast starters since their promotion to the Premier League in 2021 and the Bees stayed true to that trend last weekend when they recorded a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace at the Gtech Community Stadium.
Only three teams had fewer attempts than Brentford (nine) on matchday one, though the clinical Londoners ranked second for accuracy, aiming 55.6% of their shots on target against city rivals Palace.
Brentford will be aiming to improve on their disappointing 16th-placed finish in last season’s Premier League, though they will take on that challenge with largely the same personnel after a quiet summer.
There were no new signings in their XI against the Eagles last week and just one fresh face on the bench (Fabio Carvalho). Star striker Ivan Toney, who is angling for a move away from the club, was left out of the team against Palace by Thomas Frank for transfer-related reasons and he is unlikely to feature against Liverpool.
Brentford’s fast-breaking forwards, Yoane Wissa and Brian Mbuemo, drew six fouls between them in last weekend’s opener and Palace picked up more yellow cards (five) than any other team on matchday one. That might be something to keep in mind while surfing the markets on Sunday.
⚔️ Liverpool v Brentford Head-to-Head
Liverpool completed a league double over Brentford last season and ran up an aggregate score of 7-1 in the process, however, the convincing final 3-0 and 4-1 scorelines in both games belied what were two competitive tussles.
When the teams last met in February at the Gtech Stadium (4-1 Liverpool), Brentford matched their visitors for shots (15-15), posted an xGF of 1.60 and drew five saves from Reds keeper Caoimhín Kelleher.
At Anfield last November (3-0 Liverpool), Brentford lodged an xGF of 1.60 to their host’s 1.70 and mustered 16 attempts to Liverpool’s 17. The Bees also won eight corners to the Reds’ six on Merseyside.
Nevertheless, the cold hard facts show that Brentford have lost on all three of their visits to Anfield since their promotion in 2021, failing to score on each occasion.
Prolific Egyptian Mohamed Salah scored twice when Brentford last visited the red half of Merseyside (November ’23) and the winger had bagged five goals in as many appearances against the Bees over the last three years.
Last term, Liverpool committed over twice as many fouls (34) as Brentford (16) across the team’s two Premier League encounters, though the Bees still picked up more yellow cards (four) than the Reds (two) in the same games.
