Sophie Haug to Score Anytime

This Liverpool squad has undergone some major changes over the summer after they finished 7th in the WSL last season. These changes haven’t necessarily made Liverpool stronger, they’ve lost their top scorer in Olivia Smith to Arsenal which leaves Sophie Haug as their main goal threat this season.

Liverpool had one of the more conservative goal totals in the WSL last season, netting just 22 goals across their 22 matches - only Leicester (21) and Crystal Palace (20) scored fewer goals than Liverpool last season. This should change under the tutelage of Gareth Taylor who is a more forward thinking coach and was previously at Manchester City.

Haug was Liverpool’s second top scorer in the WSL last season after the departed Smith with six goal contributions across her 19 starts in all competitions last year. Haug has stepped up for this Liverpool side before, providing 10 goal contributions across her 20 appearances in the WSL during the 23/24 campaign.

Liverpool to Win

Liverpool will be looking for revenge having lost this fixture 2-0 last season, despite Everton going down to 10 men late on in the game. Liverpool will be playing at Anfield as it is the international break which should aid their chances of taking all three points here in Gareth Taylor’s first competitive game in charge of the club.

Taylor helped Manchester City make their home ground a really tough place to come to with eight wins from his 11 matches in his final full season when City were the home side. He can bring a similar consistency to Liverpool, starting here against their fiercest rivals.

🔴 New Direction for Liverpool

As I briefly touched on in the explanation for my selections, Liverpool have gone through some serious changes over the summer. The main change being in the dugout with Gareth Taylor taking over from long term coach Matt Beard who had been at the club for the better part of four years, so it is quite a shift in direction for the club.

Liverpool Women are not in the same position as the men’s team at the moment, they finished seventh in the WSL last season and were way off the pace of sides like Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United who set the pace in the WSL last season.

Taylor’s main challenge will be getting more goals into this Liverpool side. They only scored 22 goals in the WSL last season which was the third lowest tally in the division. Taylor is a front footed, forward thinking coach so we should see some more goals from Liverpool this season.

🔵 Everton Look to Extend Strong Record Against City Rivals

Everton tend to do pretty well against their city rivals on the road. They’ve won four of the six matches the sides have contested in the WSL when Liverpool are the home side, including running out 2-0 winners in this fixture last season.

Everton finished eighth in the WSL last season, just one spot and one point behind Liverpool so it’s fair to say that there really isn’t that much between the sides based on their displays last season.

Everton won just two of their 11 away games in the WSL last season but of course one of these victories was reserved for their city rivals. They conceded 15 goals across these games so this could be an opportunity for Liverpool to find their goalscoring boots and make an early improvement on their poor form in front of goal last season.

Everton ran out 2-0 winners in this fixture last season, and also won the meeting at Goodison Park to nil.
