Luton v Burnley
📅
Kick Off: Monday 12th August at 20:00
🏆
Competition: Championship
📺
Watch Live: Sky Sports Football
Luton Town host Burnley at Kenilworth Road on Monday night, as both teams return to the Championship after one-season stints in the Premier League.
Had Nottingham Forest not suffered a six-point deduction last season, relegation would have been a formality for each of these clubs. Both sides will possess the same goal of returning to the top flight at the first time of asking and will be hoping to be better equipped to bridge what appears to be a widening gulf between the leading clubs and the rest.
The quests of both teams will begin with a dose of Monday Night Football, which will offer a glimpse into exactly where these clubs are placed at this early stage of the campaign. This fixture also marks the beginning of Burnley’s Scott Parker era, following Vincent Kompany’s surprise summer exit for Bayern Munich.

Luton v Burnley Best Bets
Unlike in recent matches between these teams, we should be expecting goals here. The home side’s defensive problems are likely to be exploited by a Burnley team that look strong going forward, with over 2.5 goals at 1.80 seeming an excellent angle here.
The bookmakers have priced the hosts as the favourites in this clash; however, with their injury problems and subsequent defensive frailties, a price of 2.90 for Burnley to win is very interesting. However, as Luton still possess some quality, our second-best bet selection for this fixture is Burnley double chance at 1.53.

⚔️ Luton v Burnley Head-to-Head
This is the third consecutive season in which Luton and Burnley have been pitted against each other. Burnley are undefeated across the four matches they have played, winning twice and drawing twice.
Incidentally, Kenilworth Road has been a happy hunting ground for Burnley lately, with the visitors winning in each of their last two visits to the venue by a single goal. Indeed, the Clarets have claimed four wins from four at the home of Luton, although two of these meetings can be discounted as they occurred close to 20 years ago.
Although recent meetings have been tight, only one has produced over 2.5 goals. Nonetheless, both teams have scored in three of the four matches, with two of the fixtures ending as a 1-1 draw. Each of these clashes have produced expected goals tallies of less than 2.5, showing that the pair are as tight on the pitch as they have appeared on paper.
Last season, Burnley notably managed more shots on target in both games (7-5 and 4-2), yet the Hatters twice enjoyed superiority on the corner count (7-6 and then 8-2).
Another eye-catching statistic from last season’s meetings was that Luton committed 26 fouls to Burnley’s 13, yet Rob Edwards’ side only edged the card count 4-3. Burnley’s central midfielders took a battering in these games. Josh Cullen was fouled on five occasions in the first meeting, while Josh Brownhill was fouled four times in the second.
Across the two games, only Burnley’s Lyle Foster and Zeki Amdouni managed shots on targets in both. They were among the five different scorers of the five goals, with Elijah Adebayo, Jacob Bruun Larsen and Carlton Morris also tallying.
📊 Luton Form and Stats
Luton didn’t spend extravagantly when they were promoted to the Premier League, and now they’re back down in the Championship which means they are not being pressed into sales. They have, however, lost one of their most important players, like Ross Barkley, who enjoyed a renaissance last season, accumulating nine goal contributions in the Premier League.
Other key assets remain, at least for now. Carlton Morris, Elijah Adebayo and Alfie Doughty all offered 10 or more goal contributions in the league last season. Indeed, the loss of Adebayo due to injury at a key point hastened their demise, and the return of the 26-year-old should be seen as a big boost going into this campaign.
More immediately, however, the Hatters start the season with problems. Defenders Teden Mengi, Amari’i Bell, Mads Andersen and Reece Burke are all set to miss this game due to injury, while Tom Lockyer remains absent due to health issues.
There are little concerns offensively, with the bulk of the unit that scored 52 Premier League goals last season still in place.
Luton’s struggles at the back have been highlighted by their performances in pre-season. They have conceded at least two goals in four of their six friendlies, which included a 3-1 defeat to LaLiga outfit Celta Vigo at home last Saturday.
Doughty was on target last weekend in that loss at the Kenny, the second match in succession in which he has netted. Morris, meanwhile, has scored three times in the warm-up games, but after striking in successive fixtures against Stevenage, AGF, and Rukh Lviv, all of which were played behind closed doors, he has gone three without scoring.
📊 Burnley Form and Stats
Scott Parker will take charge of Burnley in competitive action for the first time on Monday, having had just a couple of friendlies to run the rule over his new group of players.
These fixtures have both ended in draws, with the Clarets held scoreless by Leganes at their training ground at the end of July, before playing out a 1-1 draw away at Cadiz last weekend. Foster, who scored five Premier League goals last season, has netted the visitors’ only goal so far, though it was brilliantly fashioned by the eye-catching Wilson Odobert, who was one of their great success stories last term.
It was notable that Zeki Amdouni was not present last weekend for the Cadiz friendly, but the Swiss forward has returned to training following his exploits at Euro 2024 and should be available for this game.
Jacob Bruun Larsen, Burnley’s top scorer with six goals in the Premier League last season, and David Datro Fofana, who netted four times, have returned to Hoffenheim and Chelsea respectively after loan deals. On the flip side, 22-year-old forward Andreas Hountondji has arrived from Kylian Mbappe-owned Caen, fresh from scoring 14 goals in France’s second tier in 2023/24.
Meanwhile, there is doubt over what lies ahead for midfielder Sander Berge, who has been linked with a move to Manchester United and did not feature against Cadiz. With a question mark hanging over him ahead of Monday’s fixture, there will be a greater onus on Josh Cullen to play an enforcing role in the midfield.
