Ribeiro ended the 24/25 domestic campaign as Mamelodi’s top scorer in the Premier Soccer League, netting 16 goals across his 27 appearances. He had 73 shots across these appearances (3.18 per 90) which is a record which suggests that he can hurt Dortmund here, especially after his standout performance in the opening fixture of the tournament.

Dortmund allowed Fluminense to have 14 shots in their opening game of the Club World Cup and looked a little lethargic at the times which is to be expected seeing as this tournament is taking place at the end of a long season. The Sundowns should feel encouraged by their performance in the opening game to test Dortmund in the final third through Ribeiro in what is likely to be their toughest assignment of the tournament.

🟡 Serhou Guirassy 

Guirassy was a bit quiet in Dortmund’s opening game of the tournament against Fluminense but will be hoping to grow into the competition and get better service from his teammates here, though Fluminense did put in a valiant defensive display to keep Dortmund out. 

Guirassy scored 34 goals across his 46 appearances for Dortmund during the regular 24/25 season, 13 of these came in the Champions League - he ended the campaign as the joint top scorer in the Champions League alongside Raphinha.

He’ll be hoping for a more reliable channel of service from his teammates, Guirassy only had 27 touches of the ball in Dortmund’s opening game and didn’t even register a shot.

Mamelodi Sundowns are used to being quite a dominant side but they will have to adapt their approach here against a side that has superior quality to them. They had 68% of the ball in their opening game win over Ulsan, registering an xG of 1.36 from their 14 shots in the game. 

The Sundowns’ dangermen are Iqraam Rayners and Lucas Ribeiro, the Brazilian set up the South African striker for their only goal in the competition so far but these two players ended the regular 24/25 season as Mamelodi Sundowns’ top scorers in the Premier Soccer League with Rayners racking up 14 goals while Ribeiro found the back of the net on 15 occasions.

Dortmund were underwhelming in their opening game against Fluminense and were really quite lucky to avoid defeat against the Brazilian side. They should have more control over this game but will need to get Serhou Guirassy more involved, the striker was left isolated at times in their 0-0 draw as best demonstrated by the fact that he didn’t even have a shot in the game. 

The rest of the Dortmund side has been set up in this very interesting 3-4-3 shape which Niko Kovac was experimenting with in the final few weeks of the season. Dortmund certainly have the right profile of wide players to be able to make this system work with Jamie Gittens and Yan Couto impressing at times during the 24/25 campaign. The question mark around this system is in the middle of the park, Dortmund may lack the legs to deal with moments of fast transition which is the approach you would expect Mamelodi Sundowns to take here.
