Manchester United v West Ham United Cheat Sheet
Manchester United v West Ham United
Manchester United are riding a wave of optimism right now, having come from behind to win against Barcelona last Thursday, they beat Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup Final on Wednesday to secure the first trophy of the Erik Ten Hag era. With no Eriksen available, Fred has been superb recently and has almost nailed down a position in the squad and the rest of the team is almost completely set, with very few changes to the starting eleven from game to game. It’s now just 1 loss in their last 19 matches for Manchester United and the atmosphere around the club is entirely positive.
West Ham gave themselves some hope of a change of form at the weekend with a 4-0 thrashing of Nottingham Forest. Danny Ings got himself a brace in that game which may kickstart his West Ham career and Antonio came off the bench and managed to get himself a goal as well. Aguerd has come back into the squad after returning from injury however West Ham’s woes are still present as Coufal will likely not be fit enough to play here. West Ham will have a rest from their relegation battle here against Manchester United and a lot of fans before this season would have fancied them with an outside chance.
West Ham average 5.33 corners per match and Manchester United concede 5.67 corners per match. West Ham have had over 3.5 corners in 8 of their last 12 matches, however against the top teams they nearly always have over 3.5 corners. In matches against the big six recently, they had 10 corners in their last match against Manchester United, 5 against Arsenal, 5 against Chelsea and 5 against Spurs.
Manchester United concede a lot of corners, they have conceded at least 3.5 corners in all of their last 6 League matches. As previously mentioned, the last time the teams played West Ham were also away from home and had 10 corners. West Ham won’t have any reason to sit back in a cup game where there is a lot less to lose so they can push forwards, therefore I think they should have at least 3.5 corners in this match.
West Ham allow 11.5 shots per 90 from an average distance of 18.1 yards out, the 3rd highest distance in the league. Manchester United have 14.37 shots per 90 from an average distance of 17.8 yards, the 5th highest in the league. Antony averages 3.27 shots per 90, the 9th highest of any player in the Premier League which he takes from an average distance of 20.4 yards, one of the highest average distances in the Manchester United squad.
Antony has had at least 3 shots in 7 of his last 12 matches and the Brazilian and he had at least 2 in 10 of them. In the previous match between the two, Elanga started at right wing and had 2 shots, Antony is left footed meaning he is more likely to cut in and have shots, so he is more than capable of having at least 3 shots in this match.
West Ham’s midfielders are some of their most fouled players, Flynn Downes may get the chance to start in this match and he draws 1.9 fouls per 90n while Lucas Paqueta draws 1.38 fouls per 90. Bruno Fernandes is a must start under Ten Hag right now as he is superb in possession and also has a fantastic work rate off the ball.
However, this work rate does seem to make him commit fouls while chasing back to help stop counter attacks. Fernandes averages 1.22 fouls per 90 and he has committed a foul in all of his last 3 matches. Last time the teams faced off, Bruno committed 3 fouls and I expect him to at least commit at least 1 again in this match.
Jarrod Bowen is a consistent performer for West Ham and one of their best players, he attempts 2.68 dribbles per 90 at defenders. Bowen is one of West Ham’s most fouled players, he has been fouled 1.92 times per 90 so far this season and has been fouled at least once in 11 of his last 12 matches. He will likely face up against Luke Shaw in this match who is one of Manchester United’s most common foulers.
Shaw averages 1.62 fouls per 90, it is also worth noting that if Malacia is chosen to start instead he averaged 2.28 fouls per 90. In the last match between the teams, Shaw made 3 fouls, the second most of anyone in this game and I expect him to struggle again against West Ham and Jarrod Bowen here. He looks to be a good price to commit 2 or more fouls, so I am backing that for this match.
