The ‘El Classico’ of darts in the group stage of this years Grand Slam of Darts and there’s probably a little more pressure on MVG to win this match than Anderson given the way the fixtures have worked out.
A defeat for MVG in this would mean he could potentially face Ryan Joyce in a winner takes all group decider to advance to the knockout stages. A victory in that would not be a given for ‘The Green Machine’. That pressure means I’m siding with ‘The Flying Scotsman’ to emerge victorious.
Both players ran out easy victors last night. MVG brushed aside Noa-Lynn Van Leuven 5-0 in his opener and Ando dismissed Ryan Joyce 5-1 but it is the latter of these two results which is the more stand out. The performances should also be scrutinised too. A 96.35 average from Van Gerwen is good Anderson produced a mammoth 113.20 average, the sixth highest match average in the tournament’s history.
Anderson recently blew his rival away in the European Championships 10-4 and has been more consistent than MVG this year and played to a higher standard. Take him to follow up here and book his place in the last sixteen.
