Aston Villa v Newcastle
Kick Off: Saturday 19th April at 17:30
Aston Villa bowed out of the Champions League in midweek but did so valiantly, with a hectic 15-minute spell having Villa fans believing that they could do the impossible at Villa Park. Ultimately, Luis Enrique’s side were able to navigate the latter stages well to dump Unai Emery’s side out of the Champions League (5-4 on aggregate with Villa winning the second leg 3-2).
Their attention will now turn to securing European qualification, with this game crucial if they want to compete in the Champions League again next season.
Newcastle fired four goals past Manchester United in their most recent home game, building off the momentum of the Carabao Cup victory, which they hope will spur them on to finish in a Champions League spot. The addition of 5th place securing Champions League this season has completely changed the race for the top spots, with more sides than ever believing they are in with a chance of reaching Europe’s elite competition.
⭐ Aston Villa v Newcastle Best Bet
The early stages of this game are likely to be tight and cagey with each side understanding what is at stake, and when considering that both sides had midweek games. However, as the game opens up or as goals fly in, we should see a more open encounter which is reflective of the impressive form both of these sides have been of late.
Aston Villa have seen over 2.5 goals in each of their last five games across all competitions, including both legs of their Champions League quarter-final tie against PSG. Villa regularly see goals at home. Unai Emery’s side have seen 46 goals across their 16 games in the Premier League at Villa Park this term (2.87 per game).
Newcastle have seen over 2.5 goals in four of their last five games across all competitions, the exception coming against West Ham away from home, who have been quite conservative in their approach since Graham Potter took over. Both sides are in great form, Newcastle have won each of their last five games whilst Aston Villa have come out on top in four of their last five games across all competitions, with the exception coming against a PSG side who have not lost at home all season.
The initial meeting between the sides saw over 2.5 goals as Newcastle ran out 3-0 winners. A large part of the result was down to Jhon Duran’s sending off in the first half at St James’ Park, which put Aston Villa on the back foot for most of the game. It’s likely to be a more even encounter between the European hopefuls here, which should still produce goals in line with their recent records across all competitions.

🔍 Aston Villa v Newcastle Players to Watch
🟣 Ollie Watkins
It was surprising to see Ollie Watkins on the bench for both of Aston Villa’s Champions League quarter-final ties against PSG, but Villa’s top scorer this season should be set to come back into the frame here. Watkins scored off the bench against Southampton last time out in a 24-minute cameo, taking his tally to 14 goals for the season in the Premier League.
He’s only five goals away from his tally last campaign, which suggests that he’s roughly maintained the same levels from last season but has faced greater competition for a starting spot, firstly from Duran earlier in the season and then the flurry of January attacking signings. Watkins found the back of the net in this fixture last season as Newcastle ran out 3-1 winners.
⚫ Dan Burn
Burn has been a dependable member of the Newcastle backline with his performances this season, earning him an England call-up. He’s committed 25 fouls across his 30 Premier League appearances (0.83 per 90). He’ll have a tough challenge here up against Ollie Watkins, who is set to come into the side having missed out on starting either leg of Aston Villa’s Champions League quarter-final against PSG.
Watkins is a real battler and has won 28 fouls across his 26 starts in the Premier League this season (1.16 per 90). He could cause Burn some issues with his mobility and speed when running in behind, neither of which are strengths of Burn.
