West Ham v Newcastle
📅
Kick Off: Monday 10th March at 20:00
🏆
Competition: Premier League
📺
What TV Channel: Sky Sports Main Event
West Ham’s revival under Graham Potter is taking shape, the Hammers have won each of their last two Premier League matches against Leicester and Arsenal with the East London outfit showing progress in multiple areas under the tutelage of the former Brighton and Chelsea boss. There isn’t much for West Ham to fight for in the Premier League with the Hammers sitting 15th in the table and safe from relegation, but Potter will want his side to climb as high as they can to carry some momentum into next season.
Newcastle will have one eye on their Carabao Cup final against Liverpool at the weekend, but Eddie Howe will be hoping for a bit of consistency from his side, Newcastle have lost each of their last two matches against Liverpool and Brighton, the latter of which saw them exit the FA Cup. The Magpies started the year in blistering fashion but have just faded slightly with injuries breaking up their effective midfield trio.
⭐ West Ham v Newcastle Best Bet
Graham Potter is certainly getting his ideas across to this West Ham side, the Hammers are improving with each game under the new boss. Their 1-0 win over Arsenal encapsulates everything that Potter wants from this side at the moment. He doesn’t quite have the right profiles at his disposal to play like he did against Brighton so he has set out the East London outfit to be pragmatic and plugged the gaps that were so obvious under Julien Lopetegui, especially in midfield.
This is evident in West Ham’s recent games, they’ve avoided defeat in three of their last five games and the games that they did lose against Chelsea and Brentford were close fought games only decided by one goal margins. This suggests that Potter’s approach is the correct one as opposed to getting this West Ham side playing his way straight away, he is slowly embedding his ideas which is resulting in close fought games and this should be no different.
Newcastle have suffered fresh injury and suspension blows, Lewis Hall has been ruled out for the season and Anthony Gordon is suspended for this game following his sending off against Brighton in the FA Cup. This totally changes the balance of this Newcastle side with Hall and Gordon linking up on that flank effectively throughout the season.
Newcastle have only won six of their 14 away games in the Premier League this season and lost 2-0 to West Ham in the initial meeting between the sides. West Ham present more of a challenge than they did in that first meeting at St James’ Park and can continue to be effective with Potter’s pragmatic approach, especially when considering the absence of key players for Newcastle.
👕 West Ham v Newcastle Predicted XI
🔍 West Ham v Newcastle Players to Watch
🟤 Jarrod Bowen
Bowen has easily been West Ham’s best player in what has been a difficult season for the Hammers. Bowen has registered 11 goal contributions across his 23 Premier League appearances whilst averaging 1.07 shots on target per 90 – Bowen is the only player in the West Ham squad other than Danny Ings to be averaging over 1.0 shots on target per 90, further underlining his importance to the East London outfit.
Bowen had four shots in the initial meeting between the sides with two of these efforts finding the target, he also picked up an assist in a man of the match performance.
🟤 Tomas Soucek
Soucek has been entrusted by Graham Potter to play further forward, the 30 year old has featured in every game of Potter’s tenure so far and is an issue in the box for the opposition with his power and physicality. This gives the Hammers the option to go direct in the absence of centre forward with Evan Ferguson still working his way into the side.
Soucek has won 19 fouls across his 25 Premier League appearances this season (0.89 per 90) and will be up against Sandro Tonali who has committed 29 fouls across his 25 Premier League appearances this season (1.59 per 90). Soucek was fouled once in the initial meeting between these sides.
