Notts County v Wimbledon

🗓️

Kick Off: Saturday 10th May at 20:00

🏆

Competition: League Two Play-Offs

📺

Watch Live: Sky Sports Main Event

It’s time for everyone’s favourite part of the EFL season, the play-offs! Four teams from each division battle it out to try and seal promotion underneath the Wembley arch.

The first League Two semi-final to take place is Notts County hosting AFC Wimbledon on Saturday night, two teams separated by just one point over the course of 46 games, and each boasting a home victory over the other during the regular season.

We have two teams coming into this game in poor form over the last two or three months. Over the last 12 games, AFC Wimbledon are 12th in the form table, and Notts County are 17th.

You’d therefore have to think these two sides go into the biggest game of their season low on confidence and wanting to keep things as tight as possible. AFC Wimbledon have recent practice, as they had to get a result at Grimsby on final day in what was pretty much a play-off game. They boiled the game down to very little and won 1-0 with a goal from a set piece. No teams' away games have seen fewer goals than AFC Wimbledon’s this season.

The regular season meeting between the two sides at Meadow Lane ended 1-0 to the hosts, and we think one goal will win this game or it will end goalless.

🔍 Notts County v Wimbledon Players to Watch

George Abbott

Spurs loanee George Abbott has enjoyed a stellar first season in professional football, with 11 goal contirbutions in 40 appearances, including winning the EFL’s Goal of the Season with his thumping volley at Accrington Stanley.

Abbott usually operates as a box-to-box midfielder, getting forward to support the attack when the opportunity arises. From 37 starts this season, Abbott has registered a shot 17 times, including in the home game against AFC Wimbledon earlier in the campaign. This bet has landed in three of Abbott’s last four games.

🔵 Sam Hutchinson

We think Hutchinson’s experience will be called upon for this big game, his presence in the middle of the park offers steel and knowhow.

But for all that experience, over 250 senior appearances, Hutchinson still has not learned how to avoid the raising of a card from the referee. Over the last two seasons, Hutchinson has played 1964 minutes, the equivalent of 21.82 x 90 minutes. He has been shown 12 cards during that time, which equates to a rate of 0.55 per 90, or one every other game.

In a game of such magnitude, where tactical fouls are likely to be needed in dangerous situations, and where yellow cards have little consequence unless they turn into two yellow cards, we cannot see Hutchinson avoiding having his name taken.

💻 Notts County v Wimbledon Form and Tactics

Notts County like to try and play through the thirds, usually operating with wing-backs and three centre-backs. They have the 2nd and joint-3rd highest scorer in League Two in their ranks in Alassana Jatta and David McGoldrick, who have scored 36 goals between them.

County’s form has to be a worry going into the play-offs, particularly their results against the top sides. They have played the other sides in the top 10, 10 times in 2025, yielding the following record : W1 D2 L7.

Conversely, AFC Wimbledon’s record against top 10 sides is impressive: W4 D4 L1, and the loss was against runners-up Port Vale. They boast the best defence in League Two, having conceded just 35 goals from 46 games. They set up to be tough to beat and hope to nick a goal.

Matty Stevens is joint-3rd in the top goalscorer standings with David McGoldrick, but has only scored four goals in his last 20 appearances.
