And just like that, their mission was accomplished. QPR’s convincing defeat of Leeds United on Friday night sealed Leicester’s return to the Premier League after just a single season slumming it in the EFL.
Preston’s motivation is also going to be lacking as they cannot mathematically make it into the top six. However, this is their final home game of another solid season, and you can be sure that Ryan Lowe and his squad will want to finish their season with some positive momentum to take into the summer.
Leicester have the 100-point target in their sights and it will be something that the fans would like to see, whether it really matters to the players and staff is unclear. With Ipswich only drawing against Hull on Saturday night as well, the Championship title can be wrapped up with a win in this match, which may matter slightly more than the points target to Enzo Maresca and his players.

⚔️ Preston v Leicester Head-to-Head
Back in early October, Preston fell victim to a clinical second-half display inspired by Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.
The first half was a real non-event with only six shots, shared three each, and with no big chances. Leicester clicked into gear in the second half and their player of the year, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, came to the fore with a couple of goals either side of a Kelechi Iheanacho strike.
It was a deserved win for the Foxes in the end as the stats demonstrate. They won the xG battle 1.48-0.43, had more shots 9-6, more big chances 3-1, and the pass count was a ridiculous 785-222 in Leicester’s favour, indeed, on the day, all 11 of Leicester’s starters completed more passes than any of Preston’s, including goalkeeper Mads Hermansen.
Though both sides have evolved and changed to an extent through the season, and obviously this match is at Deepdale rather than the King Power, but we should expect to see Leicester have more possession here again. That doesn’t necessarily mean more corners for Leicester though, they actually tied 4-4 in corners in this October match.
📊 Preston Form and Stats
Preston fell to a 1-0 defeat to QPR last time out, which made it three defeats in a row for Ryan Lowe’s side.
This has meant that they are destined to finish between 8th and 12th, a decent season by budget, but one that ultimately is disappointing as the goal would’ve been to end up in the play-offs.
With this lack of motivation and poor form, it is difficult to be too positive about Preston’s chances here. They do have a decent home record, they have won 5 of their last 10 at home in the Championship, including some impressive performances, but overall they are running at a +0.2 xG differential over the last 10 home matches, so they are creating slightly more goalscoring opportunities than their visitors.
📊 Leicester Form and Stats
Leicester’s results had been a source of concern until last weekend.
Their 2-1 win at home to West Brom settled some nerves and gave them a platform to smash Southampton 5-0 in a sumptuous display, one of their best of the season.
Leicester were right at it from the start of the match. With promotion confirmed now due to Leeds and Ipswich failing to win over the weekend, it is guesswork as to whether the motivation will be there to be as dynamic from the start.
There should at least be some relaxation in the Leicester squad. This should enable them to be fluid and with the quality within the team, which is of a much higher level than Preston, and indeed most Championship teams, there could be goals in this for the Foxes.
Their xG differential over the last ten away games is an impressive +0.9 xG per match, so they have been creating better goalscoring chances than their opponents, despite the fact that they have actually lost three away matches in a row.
💰 Preston v Leicester Best Bets
Despite Leicester’s poor away results, their situation means that they can relax a bit and could potentially play their best football.
Preston’s results have been poor as well, and when Leicester put them under pressure in the earlier meeting this season, Preston were unable to keep them out. Leicester to win the match is odds-on at 1.61, but adding over 1.5 goals to a Leicester win makes it 2.0 and that is the recommended best bet.
Also recommended is for Leicester to cover the -1 handicap at 2.87. This obviously happened in the first meeting, and Leicester easily covered it in the midweek match, and it feels as though if the Foxes could play with freedom then they have the ability to sew up the title with style.
