QPR v Plymouth

Queens Park Rangers may still be searching for their first Championship victory of the season but they still enter Saturday’s match in high spirits – last weekend they came from 2-0 down to secure a 2-2 draw away at Sheffield United to earn an excellent point. The point will feel even sweeter given Lyndon Dykes’ 88th-minute equaliser came despite being down a man for over 30 minutes, following Jack Colback’s sending-off.
Plymouth Argyle are also searching for their first league triumph of the campaign. Like QPR, Wayne Rooney’s side do have an EFL Cup win to their name after defeating lower league opposition, but three points here is what they are hoping for most. The opening day horror show at Sheffield Wednesday, when they lost 4-0, was put to one side to a degree, showcasing marked improvement to draw at home to Hull City last Saturday.
Whilst two winless clubs are taking to the field, it should still be an exciting and intriguing contest. The home team are rated as an odds-on shot to end their winless league streak and maybe that second-half comeback at Bramall Lane last time out could serve as a springboard for some improved results moving forward.

➡️ QPR to win & over 1.5 goals @ 1.91 with Paddy Power
It is still early days into the new season but these two winless clubs (in league action at least) will soon start to get itchy feet if they do not get three points under their belts soon.
QPR caught the eye of many last season given their rapid progress under Martí Cifuentes and there was greater expectation surrounding them entering this campaign, especially compared to their next visitors, Plymouth. They may be winless in the league, but their 2-2 draw from 2-0 down at Sheffield United would have felt like a victory, and they can enter Saturday’s match in high spirits.
Plymouth improved greatly against Hull compared to the Sheffield Wednesday debacle but they still have it all to prove under Wayne Rooney, who is still working out his best XI. He has inherited a team that had a dreadful away record last season and it still looks to be tough to back the Pilgrims when they play away from Home Park.
Therefore, a QPR win and over 1.5 goals appears to be a good angle to attack this game. Rangers have netted two or more goals in 11 of their 14 wins since Cifuentes became Head Coach, whilst Argyle shipped two or more goals in 11 of their last 14 league defeats.
The home side are missing key attacker Ilias Chair, but some recent recruits have added some much-needed life and energy to the team, with encouraging signs visible in their clash with Sheffield United last weekend.

📊 QPR Form and Stats
QPR will no doubt have been pleased to take a draw out of a tough away match with Sheffield United considering they were 2-0 behind inside the opening 13 minutes. They lost their opening day clash with West Bromwich Albion despite scoring the first goal, a rarity for the Hoops who lost only two of 19 games in which they opened the scoring last season (W13 D4).
Undoubtedly, Martí Cifuentes has made a huge impression since he was appointed Head Coach in October 2023. A 38.89% winning ratio was more than enough to guide them away from relegation trouble and victories over the likes of Leicester and Leeds last season highlights his tactical qualities. Half of his overall victories came despite failing to keep a clean sheet and 11 of the 14 wins under his stewardship involved at least two goals, so parking the bus to grind out a 1-0 win is not usually part of their gameplan.
The Rs have found the back of the net in nine of their previous 11 competitive fixtures and have averaged 1.6 goals per game in all competitions in 2024/25. They have done this without star player Ilias Chair, who will miss the next couple of months with a back injury. Fortunately, recent signings Karamoko Dembele and Koki Saito both impressed on their debuts at Sheffield United and can expect to cause Plymouth a problem or two.
Regardless of who is or isn’t available for Cifuentes, the Spaniard will be reassured knowing his team will always be a threat given the style of play and approach he has implemented. In their three matches this season in all competitions Rangers have averaged 12.67 shots.
They have managed to record a combined 12 shots on target in those contests, scoring five goals, which means 41.67% of attempts on target have resulted in goals, and just under half their shots have been on target. That suggests an impressive level of accuracy when working the goalkeeper.
📊 Plymouth Form and Stats
One reason Plymouth are yet to win a Championship match so far is their sheer lack of attacking output in terms of creating chances. Manager Wayne Rooney may be the record goalscorer for Manchester United and did hold that tag for the England national team too, but he hasn’t been able to pass on such magic to his team just yet. A combined xG figure of just 1.33 from their two league contests will be a concern to him.
Some may argue that they haven’t fared much better defensively either, but in their defence the 4-0 opening day loss at Sheffield Wednesday counts for the vast majority of the issues so far. Argyle conceded 2.98 xGA, but they did win the xG battle (1.12-0.62) in their next league game at home to Hull; suggesting a notable improvement from that alarming first game of this season.
A clean sheet is vital to any team wanting to win any match but in the case of Plymouth it is especially important. This is because each of their last five wins in the league came whilst not conceding a goal, including three away encounters. A fast start is also apparently vital as they would lead at half time in all five.
Rooney will need to make the Pilgrims much tougher to beat on the road, which has been an issue since the club won promotion from League One. Last season, only relegated duo Rotherham and Birmingham claimed fewer away points in the Championship.
⚔️ QPR v Plymouth Head-to-Head
Last season was the first time QPR and Plymouth played in the same division since 2009/10, so this hasn’t been a frequent fixture in recent times. They played one another twice last season in the regular season and before faced off once in a 2020 League Cup meeting, where Plymouth were 3-2 winners.
In 2023/24, nothing could separate both clubs as each contest would result in a draw; 0-0 at Loftus Road in December of last year and 1-1 at Home Park a few months ago in April. However, the xG battle was convincingly won by Rangers on both occasions, who can feel hard done by not having claimed four extra points in their meetings with the Pilgrims. QPR averaged a whopping 21.5 shots per game over these season meetings, further outlining their dominance, although Plymouth did receive a red card in the away fixture.
Wayne Rooney has endured mixed fortunes across his managerial career when coming up against Queens Park Rangers. His first meeting in January 2021 saw him get a win at Loftus Road under his belt after his team secured a 1-0 victory. However, this is as good as good as it has gotten for Rooney as he oversaw defeats in the other two, albeit both by a slender one-goal margin.
