Over 0.5 Rangers Goals

I think Rangers look overpriced to score at least once in Greece on Wednesday night. New Gers boss Martin showed during his time with Southampton in the Premier League last season that he is a manager who is reluctant to abandon his attacking principles.

Rangers will carry plenty of attacking threat on the counter given that the onus is on

Panathinaikos to force the issue on Wednesday night. The Light Blues made the net bulge in five of their six games away from home in last season’s Europa League, scoring against the likes of Olympiacos, Fernerbahce and Manchester United.

Over 2.5 Goals

While I think Rangers can land a blow on Panathinaikos’ backline on Wednesday night, I suspect that they could struggle to keep the back door shut. The Scottish giants failed to keep a clean sheet in nine of their 12 outings in last season’s Europa League.

Panathinaikos squandered some gilt-edged opportunities to score in Glasgow last week, and they will now have to throw caution to the wind here to try and salvage their bid to reach the Champions League.

Three of Rangers last three continental contests away from home have featured three or more goals, with both teams scoring in three of those four matches.

  • Both teams have scored in four of Rangers’ last five  European fixtures away from home.

  • Three of Rangers’ last four European fixtures away from home have featured Over 2.5 Goals.

  • This week’s second leg will not be played at Panathinaikos’ Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium due to ongoing construction work.

Panathinaikos and Rangers will reconvene for the second leg of their Champions League second round qualifier on Wednesday night.

Russell Martin’s men seized control of this tie with a 2-0 win at Ibrox last Tuesday. However, the bookies are expecting Panathinaikos to come out on top in this week’s return match, with a home win priced at 1.7 while both the draw and a Rangers triumph are trading at 3.8.

🟢 No Home Comforts for Panathinaikos

While Panathinaikos will be quietly confident about their chances of turning this tie around, they will have to try and do so in unfamiliar surroundings. Due to ongoing construction work at their Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium home, Wednesday’s second leg will take place at the Olympic Stadium in Athens.

Panathinaikos will consider themselves unlucky to have come away from Ibrox with a 2-0 defeat last week. Despite being reduced to ten men shortly before the hour mark, Rui Vitoria’s side won the expected goals (xG) battle 1.65 to 1.57, racking up 14 attempts on goal, four of which hit the target. The Greens also clocked up six corners to Rangers’ three.

🔵 Rangers a Work in Progress

Rangers are the very definition of a work in progress under Russell Martin. As was the case last week, Martin may have no choice but to adopt a square peg in a round hole approach in certain positions. The new Gers boss named three of his summer signings in the starting XI for last week’s first leg, while Djeidi Gassama came off the bench and provided a real moment of magic to seal the win.

While there were some early signs of promise, it would be fair to say that Rangers also rode their luck at times in the first leg, so they could face a nervy 90 minutes (or more) in the Greek capital this midweek.

📊Panathinaikos v Rangers H2H

Last week’s first leg in Glasgow saw Rangers and Panathinaikos cross paths for the first time since 2008. Rangers’ 2-0 success last Tuesday means that they have now avoided defeat in four of their overall five meetings with the Greek giants.

The Light Blues could also draw confidence from the fact they avoided defeat against perennial Greek champions Olympiacos away from home in last season's Europa League, claiming a 1-1 draw on that occasion.
