Under the management of Milos Milojevic, Malmo struggled for consistency in the Allsvenskan in 2022. The Blue Ones are the reigning Swedish champions and have won the last two top-flight titles but the departure of Jon Dahl Tomasson in the off-season has caused a bumpy start to the defence of their title this time around.
The home team have won just six of their opening 13 matches in the league and they sit outside of the top three and the European spots ahead of this weekend’s round of fixtures. Their struggles have been epitomised by a lack of efficiency in front of goal, managing just 14 goals in their 13 games so far this season. In contrast, they were the league’s top scorers with 58 in 2021.
They do come into this on the back of another unconvincing performance in midweek in the first-leg of their UEFA Champions League first qualifying round tie against Icelandic champions Vikingur Reykjavik. Malmo won the game 3-2 but against inferior opposition, who were down to ten men for over 50 minutes of the match, that isn’t an ideal score line to protect next week.
Varberg have started the season in similarly inconsistent form; however, their inconsistencies and deficiencies are expected and far more accepted.
The visitors’ most recent outing was a 3-0 hammering of struggling Varnamo, though, last weekend. That victory saw them leapfrog Varnamo as they try to move away from the bottom three and the relegation places. Their struggles, much like Malmo, have been evident in front of goal with just 11 scored so far this season.
Malmo will remain firm favourites for this one, especially with their home advantage, but the lack of fluency going forward, as well as probable rotation for the second-leg of their tie against Vikingur, means it might not be a classic.

Elfsborg v AIK

After a frustrating end to last season whereby Elfsborg were in the title race until the final couple of matches before finishing outside of even the European spots, they were expected to be up towards the top end of the table once again and challenging for that top three finish.
However, it has been a very slow start to the campaign. The home team won just three of their opening eight matches as they languished in the bottom-half of the table. Four matches without a defeat is a run of form that has helped them climb into the top-half, though.
They now face an AIK side that suffered the heartache of missing out on the Swedish title in 2021 on goal difference to Malmo. The visitors started this season on fire as they look to make amends for that cruel ending but a run of just one victory in their last five matches has seen them stagnate in their charge.
Bartosz Grzelak’s Gnaget have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last six matches, after four successive shutouts in late-April and early-May. Elfsborg have been fairly free-scoring, too, with their 24 goals in 12 games being the third most in the entire division. Given that, this should be an entertaining match for the neutral.
