Grasshoppers v Luzern
🏟
Saturday 29th October – 5:00PM KO
It was a weekend to remember for Grasshoppers as they triumphed in the Zurich derby over their bitter rivals FC Zurich for the first time since 2018. That last victory four years ago came during a significant low point for this giant of Swiss football as they were eventually relegated just one season later after over 70 years in the top flight. The 4-1 win on Sunday, their largest since 2015, not only brought a five-game winless run to an end but also served as a sign that this club is moving in the right direction again. Of course, it was also just satisfying for GC to pile on the misery for winless FCZ having watched their neighbours lift the title last season.
Luzern also got themselves back to winning ways after they came from behind at home to win 3-1 against Lugano in a pulsating final half hour. Max Meyer showed exactly why he was so heavily hyped in his early career, inspiring the comeback and making it six goals in his last five Super League games. The result keeps FCL hot on the tail of Grasshoppers before their visit to the Letzigrund as both teams aim to break into the top three.
These two will be brimming with confidence after racking up goals and the victory in their last outing. This should be an entertaining contest, Grasshoppers are only behind YB for goals scored (25) and are out in front for goals conceded (25). Luzern have scored 20 goals themselves and conceded 17 in just 12 games. Six of seven games at the Letzigrund for GC have ended with Over 2.5 Goals and my pick is for this match to make it seven out of the last eight on Saturday.

FC Sion v Zurich
🏟
Sunday 30th October – 1:15PM KO
Matches against their kryptonite FC Winterthur aside, FC Sion continue to show their grit and newfound steely resolve this season. Those two defeats to FCW on October 2nd and October 18th are the only two of their last seven games. They’ve won only once in this time, but staged a remarkable comeback in their 4-4 draw away at Grasshoppers and also held Young Boys to a 1-1 draw in Bern last weekend. The difference between the 21/22 and 22/23 campaigns for Sion couldn’t be starker and they remain firmly in the picture for a top-two finish in the Super League.
It is difficult to place FC Zurich at the moment. After three successive goalless draws against Winterthur, Young Boys and Basel, it seemed like they had turned a corner under Bo Henriksen before an emphatic 4-1 loss in the derby to Grasshoppers. All the renewed hope and optimism evaporated, but only for a few days. The reason for that is FCZ’s exploits in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday evening. This is a competition that has served as a distraction and a place where they suffered four straight defeats in their group, however, they posted their best performance of the season in a comeback 2-1 win over Bodo at the Letzigrund and looked like a different team. The talent is there in this side and if they have overcome the mental block that has afflicted them this season, FCZ may be due an upswing in form.
I predict Both Teams to Score at the Tourbillon. Sion have one clean sheet in their last nine and scored in all but two while FCZ have leaked goals in most of their games. I think that performance in midweek is a turning point and we’ll see FCZ continue to improve, I’m just not convinced they can keep Sion out.

Young Boys v FC Basel
🏟
Sunday 30th October – 3:30PM KO
League leaders Young Boys were frustrated in their 1-1 draw at home to FC Sion last Saturday. Neither YB or their visitors got going in a sluggish first half and Raphael Wicky’s side then had to come back from behind to salvage a point as a pair of penalties provided the narrative in the capital. Mario Balotelli, often the main attraction, had fired Sion into the lead before a swift response ten minutes later by the in-form Jean-Pierre Nsame. The points would be shared, even though Donat Rrudhani should’ve won the game for the home side in added time. Still, no damage was really done as a draw for Servette away at St. Gallen kept the five-point lead at the top over the Genevans. The result also maintains a six-match unbeaten streak as the form team in the league.
After a pair of drab and uneventful 0-0 draws away to Servette and at home to Zurich, you would’ve been hard-pressed to find an optimistic FC Basel fan before they faced a resurgent Winterthur at St. Jakob-Park on Sunday. Football has a tendency to surprise though, and there were more than a few expressions of disbelief inside the stadium as Spanish defender Arnau Comas scored his first two goals for the club… inside the first eight minutes of the match. It was an electric start and far from the norm for FCB this season. Truth be told, they struggled to reach those limits throughout the rest of the contest, scoring a third on fifty-eight minutes and conceding a late consolation.
Despite that improvement, this is a whole different challenge for an erratic FCB team that often lacks a cutting edge. YB have an excellent record at home and are unbeaten in 12 against Basel at the Wankdorf, winning 10 of those. With their firepower and FCB having played in midweek, I think YB can return to winning ways here.

Winterthur v St. Gallen
🏟
Sunday 30th October – 3:30PM KO
Winterthur’s revival came to a screeching halt on Sunday as they were brushed aside 3-1 at St. Jakob-Park against Basel. Prior to that defeat, Winti had three wins in their last four in a staggering improvement from a start to the season that had brought just two points and numerous heavy defeats, especially at the Schutzenwiese. It wasn’t a bad performance at the Joggeli at the weekend, there were chances for the visitors, and they did score a consolation goal right on the full-time whistle, but they were 2-0 down after just eight minutes and never really looked like taking anything from the game after that.
St. Gallen visit this stadium in league action for the first time since both teams were in the Challenge League back in 2011. After such an impressive start to the campaign, Peter Zeidler’s team have not won in six matches and is clinging onto fourth position as a result. They are unbeaten in their last three though and have shown fighting spirit to come from behind in their last two games against Luzern and Servette.
I predict Both Teams to Score here. Winterthur have kept clean sheets in their last two home wins, but that is something they can’t maintain given the number of goals they have conceded so far. FCSG have scored in all but one of their thirteen matches this season and have had BTTS in their last ten league fixtures in a row.
