Lecce v Atalanta
🏟
Wednesday 9th November – 5:30PM KO
Atalanta will probably be pleased to be playing as far away from home, making the long trip from Northern Italy all the way down to Salento to face Lecce. Having lost their last two at home and boasting an excellent away record in recent seasons, La Dea will back themselves in Puglia.
Gian Piero Gasperini’s side played excellently in their loss to Napoli last time out, but the Serie A leaders just had too much for them and they couldn’t find a way to beat the brilliant Alex Meret in goal. At Lecce, they’ll be keen to take their frustrations out and they may just rediscover their old ways of scoring, entertaining and being relentless in coming forward.
During 2019/20 they hit seven in Lecce in a 7-2 win, and while they’re unlikely to run up a score that high again, it wouldn’t be a great surprise to see Atalanta put more than a couple past their hosts. Duvan Zapata got a hat-trick that day and he’s still easing his way back into playing and is searching for his first goal of the season, while Jose Luis Palomino’s news of being acquitted in his doping trial will no doubt come as a boost to the entire team.

Sassuolo v Roma
🏟
Wednesday 9th November – 5:30PM KO
Having progressed in the Europa League but then losing to an under-strength Lazio side in the weekend’s Derby della Capitale, a tired Roma might have preferred a kinder midweek fixture than a trip to Sassuolo.
While the Neroverdi themselves are in the bottom half of the table and not quite playing their very best stuff in the last few weeks, Alessio Dionisi’s side are more than capable of bloodying some noses and Jose Mourinho will be well aware of that as he takes his team to Reggio Emilia.
Without a goal in their last two, Sassuolo will be keen to get back firing and the last time they went back-to-back matches without scoring they hit 11 in their subsequent six outings. Roma, then, will have to be on high alert.
The Giallorossi themselves have become something of masters of a comeback – the Rome Derby aside – and came from behind to advance in Europe after doing just that to win away at Hellas Verona in Serie A previously. It wouldn’t be a great surprise to see them find themselves behind again on Wednesday.

Inter v Bologna
🏟
Wednesday 9th November – 7:45PM KO
Inter simply need a reaction after a humiliating 2-0 loss to Juventus in the Derby d’Italia at the weekend. The Old Lady have been notably poor this season, and the 2020/21 Italian champions have perhaps been let off lightly with their own poor form this season.
But against Bologna they’ll meet an opponent in quietly good form. The Rossoblu look reborn under Thiago Motta and have strung together three wins on the bounce, which isn’t the kind of run we’ve come to associate with the Emilians. In fact, they’ve not had a longer run of wins in the top flight since chaining together six in 1967.
They could well, then, go ahead in Milan, though that won’t exactly fill them with confidence. They’ve dropped more points than anybody from winning positions this term – 14 – although Inter are yet to gain a single point from a losing position in Serie A this season.
Inter conceded twice at Juventus, twice against Bayern Munich, and three times against both Fiorentina and Barcelona in the last month, so there are vulnerabilities there that Bologna will seek to exploit. With Marko Arnautovic up top and looking to prove a point to a former club, they might well do it.

Verona v Juventus
🏟
Thursday 10th November – 5:30PM KO
Up against the worst team in Serie A, Juventus will fancy their chances as they travel to take on Hellas Verona. The Mastini are rock bottom of the table and would have preferred to face plenty of other sides in this midweek matchday.
But Juventus are travelling across Northern Italy full of confidence and in the middle of a good run – at least domestically. Since losing to AC Milan on October 8, Juventus have beaten Torino, Empoli, Lecce and Inter in consecutive Serie A matches. It should be noted though that they’ve lost each of their three Champions League games in that period.
Against Verona they’ll likely extend that domestic winning run to five ahead of a real test against Lazio on Sunday before the World Cup break. Federico Chiesa is back in contention, and Angel Di Maria is returning too.
Verona aren’t the team that beat Juventus at the Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi last season, and have lost eight in a row for the first time in their history, while Juventus have conceded fewer goals than anybody this term and Verona have conceded the most.
Everything is pointing towards the same outcome – Juventus win in Verona.
