Sheffield Wednesday v Leeds
📅
Kick Off: Friday 23rd August at 20:00
🏆
Competition: Championship

Sheffield Wednesday fans arriving at Hillsborough for this fixture would be forgiven for feeling in a state of confusion, especially those who physically made the trip to the Stadium of Light on Sunday.
The 0-4 defeat to the Black Cats was comprehensive as the Owls failed to get their composure back from conceding an early goal. Danny Röhl is smart enough to understand that whilst that display is not representative of the capabilities of his team, it is also a concern that needs addressing in terms of being able to be more resilient when they go behind.
Meanwhile, Leeds fans are close to being in open revolt. Whilst it may seem early for such an extreme position, and they haven’t actually lost a league game yet, it is a sign of the expectations that come with being such a big club in the second tier. Leeds had a substandard start to last season as well and that ended up costing them in the final standings.
This Yorkshire derby will not go close to deciding how the seasons of the clubs pan out, but a win for Daniel Farke will certainly ease the pressure on the German.

Sheffield Wednesday v Leeds Best Bets
➡️ Sheffield Wednesday +1 Handicap @ 1.91 with Paddy Power
➡️ Anthony Musaba to score anytime @ 6.0 with Paddy Power
Neither team are expected to make many changes, although Leeds are working on new signings, none will be expected to play in the first XI this Friday if they are successful in negotiations in midweek.
There are reasons to believe that Wednesday are worth supporting in this fixture. Undoubtedly, they are the underdogs going into the contest, but Leeds are a little rusty and lacking in performance at this stage.
Therefore, one recommendation is to support Sheffield Wednesday on the +1 handicap at 1.91, which would be a winner if the result is a draw or a Wednesday win.
The best bet recommended for the match though is an EFL anytime goalscorer bet. Anthony Musaba is slightly overpriced. The arrival of Ike Ugbo probably means that Musaba is slightly less of a percentage goal threat, but he is still Wednesday’s second most likely goalscorer, and after taking five shots in his last Hillsborough appearance, he will be a key attacking outlet. His price of 5/1 to score anytime is backable.

📊 Sheffield Wednesday Form and Stats
It has very much been Jekyll and Hyde from Sheffield Wednesday at the start of the season.
A superb performance at home to Plymouth saw the Owls execute their gameplan to the letter and come out 4-0 winners. However, it was the exact opposite scoreline when they went away to Sunderland.
Last Sunday Wednesday suffered from conceding two goals early and not being able to recover. They only created 0.38 xG, half of which was from set pieces, and they conceded 1.67 xG the other way.
If we include the EFL Cup first round win, all of Wednesday’s matches have gone over 2.5 goals, but only that 2-1 EFL Cup win at Hull saw both teams scoring.
📊 Leeds Form and Stats
Draws have been the order of the day for Leeds in the Championship season so far.
The opening match against Portsmouth was a chaotic, topsy-turvy encounter and whilst Brenden Aaronson did well to come off the bench to equalise, the season would already look very different if the American had converted his gilt-edged last-minute chance as well to win the game.
A point away at the Hawthorns is generally a good result, and if the win had come against Pompey then there wouldn’t have been an adverse reaction. As it was, neither side really consistently threatened the opposition goal, with both teams creating 0.7 xG.
The EFL Cup defeat at home to Middlesbrough is probably the result and performance that is tipping the scales so heavily against Farke at this stage. Whilst this is unusual for the League Cup to carry so much weight, the team was a fairly strong one, and the performance was poor.
Two out of their three matches have gone over 2.5 goals, and only one has seen both teams scoring.
⚔️ Sheffield Wednesday v Leeds Head-to-Head
There is no clear steer from recent meetings between the sides in terms of who might win the match, but there is an indication that goals could be difficult to come by.
2018 was the last time that either both teams scored or that a match went over 2.5 goals, albeit the clubs have been separated for much of the time between then and now.
The matches last year favoured Leeds. They won this corresponding fixture in March by two goals to nil, and drew the home match 0-0 against Sheffield Wednesday. Both goalscorers in the victory for Leeds are still in the Leeds squad, Patrick Bamford opened the scoring on that occasion, with Wilfried Gnonto adding the second.
Overall, going back to 1920, Leeds hold the historical edge, with 40 wins to 34, with 27 draws in the mix as well.
