• Mjällby are top of the table and have won five of the last seven

Sirius have had a really tough time of late, only winning once in six matches and collecting a measly four points in that run of games. This has sent them further down the league, now in 13th place in Allsvenskan, only above Degerfors in the relegation playoff spot on goal difference. 

Mjällby have conversely been going from strength to strength, the surprise package holding onto top spot by not losing for seven matches. They are one of the most in-form teams in Allsvenskan, securing 17 points of a possible 21 in their current unbeaten run.

The home team are rightly underdogs, giving the odds of 3.4 for a Sirius win, with Mjällby priced at a generous 1.91. Goals are to be expected with the over 2.5 goals sitting at 1.57.

🔵 Sirius's Struggles

The outfit from Uppsala have not managed to find the right combination of intensity on and off the ball and controlled possession, often getting overrun and making mistakes defensively to gift opportunities to the opposition. Averaging 1.8 goals conceded per game from 1.74 xG, they are more or less where they deserve to be, also too impotent offensively with 1.4 goals per match. 

Last weekend, they took the lead early away at IFK Göteborg, but in an all too familiar theme, they then gave away a needless penalty and conceded two late goals for a 3-1 defeat in an evenly contested encounter. That makes it three losses in the last five, and seven in total, flirting with relegation despite a strong attacking set-up. The defensive solidity just isn’t ther,e and Diawara’s lack of consistency between the sticks doesn’t help.

🟡 Mjällby Back on the Winning Trail

Mjällby, the huge surprise package this season, keep going strong at the top of the table. After a frustrating draw with champions Malmö FF, they got back to winning ways by taking the game to strugglers Östers and getting their rewards in the second half, stalwart Jacob Bergström bagging his first goal of the season to secure the victory. Their opponents were sharp on the counter but lacked the final touch, while Mjällby controlled proceedings well and got their just rewards. 

With Hammarby also winning, Mjällby remain a point ahead, having pulled away from Elfsborg and AIK in third and fourth, respectively. Having only lost once to date, little suggests they will drop off anytime soon, although the departure of key creator and goalscoring threat Nicklas Røjkjær may have an impact, and hopefully they manage to replace him adequately. 

Mjällby are always entertaining with their high work rate, quick play in possession and constant attacking intent. They have somewhat overperformed their xG, finishing expertly and scoring 29 goals from 23.0 xG, and always seem to manage to find a way to score.

This is the first meeting between the two this season, with the latest encounter coming in November 2024, ending with a 1-1 scoreline, the only recent draw.
