Wrexham to Win (v Shrewsbury Town)
🏆
Competition: League One
📅
Kick Off: Saturday 7th September at 15:00
It seems that no matter the league Wrexham play in they are simply going to win plenty of football matches. Back-to-back promotions has given them a shot at League One and four games in they are unbeaten and sit joint-top of the standings alongside fellow promoted club Stockport and big-spending Birmingham. The Welsh outfit are averaging 2.00 goals per league game so far and have a home record to the envy of most. Phil Parkinson’s side have won two from two at STōK Cae Ras this season and they’ve had the best home record in each of the last two seasons, when winning the National League and League Two titles respectively.
Shrewsbury are the latest club to try and end Wrexham’s undefeated start to the league campaign. The Shropshire-based club will have been relieved to get their maiden victory under their belts last time out when beating Leyton Orient 3-0, but Orient have a 100% losing record, so more is needed for Salop to prove they are over their early season blip. They certainly need to show more on the road given they’ve lost both away assignments this season, and both without scoring. Given they averaged just under 0.70 goals per away league game in 2023/24 it proves their problems playing away have been ongoing for some time.
This appears to be a classic case of one team with an exceptional home record facing an opponent that frequently struggles to play away. Pre-season expectations were also on Wrexham to impress and Shrewsbury to battle relegation, and in Saturday’s one-off encounter, plenty suggests there is only one likely outcome.
Germany to Win (v Hungary)
🏆
Competition: UEFA Nations League
📅
Kick Off: Saturday 7th September at 19:45
Germany departed Euro 2024 at the quarter-final stage at the hands of eventual winners Spain and are now set on getting back on track in UEFA Nations League action. They of course hosted the tournament and heading into it expectations were somewhat low by their high standards after some indifferent form. It could be argued the last eight was as good as they could hope for, but under Julian Nagelsmann they will feel confident about the future.
Hungary failed to get out of their group stage, having initially entered the tournament with a fair amount of positivity behind them. They won’t have been happy to have departed the Euros when they did and they’ve been placed into a tough group for the UEFA Nations League, with Netherlands also potted with them. On paper, third could be the best they can expect, whilst Germany will know the importance of beating the likes of Hungary and Bosnia & Herzegovina if they’re to win the group, as they’d expect.
Nagelsmann no longer has the likes of the retired Manuel Neuer, Toni Kroos, Thomas Müller and İlkay Gündoğan to call upon, but that may be no bad thing as it will allow some of their talented and younger squad options to take more of a prominent role. Much has been said of Germany’s form in recent times, which includes when not having to qualify for the Euros considering they were hosts, but the fact is they’ve beaten the likes of France and Netherlands under Nagelsmann’s tenure. Also, Germany did beat Hungary at Euro 2024 in the group stage when 2-0 winners. Hungary’s squad hasn’t had much significant movement for a while now and the feeling is they need that for them to realistically compete with Germany in a one-off match such as this.
