This is the biggest game in Northern Irish football since qualification for Euro 2016. A positive result for Michael O’Neill’s men in this fixture gives them a great opportunity to seal second place in the group and go on to a play-off round to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.

It would be their first World Cup Finals qualification since 1986.

These recommended Best Bet Builder Bookmakers are worth a look for the weekend.

Northern Ireland Double Chance @ 1.80

I am quite pro-Northern Ireland at the match prices, although not quite enough to tip them for an outright win, but certainly, there is enough in the data to suggest that they are well capable of getting something from this match.

Northern Ireland don’t win away very often, but this looks to me to be an above-average Northern Ireland side, and the Slovakians don’t look to be at any kind of peak in their own crop of players.

From a performance perspective, Slovakia provided very little in terms of chances in the return leg of this fixture. Indeed, they fired only seven shots all game, totalling 0.6 xG, despite being behind from the 19th minute. They had only one shot in the first half, with three of the shots coming after they went 2-0 down.

It is difficult to compare the performances of both nations vs Germany, obviously Slovakia won their home match whilst Northern Ireland lost, but the shot statistics were actually similar. Also, Slovakia relied on a last-minute winner in Luxembourg, whilst Northern Ireland were much more convincing.

I don't think there is much between these teams on a neutral ground; therefore, there is a lot of home advantage built in here. To get the draw as well as a Northern Ireland win for the same price as Slovakia seems a good deal to me.

Over 4.5 Slovakia Corners @ 1.87

Both of these nations actually have a fairly consistent record of winning corners, especially in recent competitive matches.

Taking into account the current World Cup campaign and the 2024/25 Nations League, Slovakia are winning 5.33 corners per match on average; this rises to 5.67 when they are playing at home.

They have beaten this line in their last five home matches in competitive internationals, including against Germany. They also won four corners in Northern Ireland in their last match against them, but the emphasis will be on Slovakia to go forward and win this in front of their home fans. They do still have ambitions to win the group and go through automatically as well.

Tomas Rigo Over 0.5 Shots @ 1.40

Rigo made a move to the EFL Championship this summer, so we know a little more about his game now. Indeed, he has been used as a #10 by Stoke, which gives us an idea of how Mark Robins sees his highest point of effectiveness.

Rigo started the last qualifier after coming off the bench in the previous three matches. He has managed four shots in this campaign, two against Luxembourg in the qualifier that he started and two others off the bench for a rate of 2.12 per 90. He averages 1.4 shots per 90 over his last 50 matches for club and country.

Bettors should be aware that Rigo is unlikely to play the full 90. This means that a super sub bet might be in play here, but getting the opportunity to back a single shot in this match at such an appealing price cannot go unpacked, especially with Slovakia as odds-on favourites here at home.

Justin Devenny Over 0.5 Shots @ 1.50

Devenny was been fulfilling the left wing back role for Michael O'Neill and has been really effective, despite it not being his most natural role.

With Shea Charles’ absence from the squad this time, there is a chance that he could be deployed more centrally, but I suspect that he will be retained wide.

Either way, the youngster clearly has an eye for a shot. He has shot five times in the World Cup campaign so far, including twice in the opposite fixture, and both shots were on target as well. This puts him at 1.25 shots per 90 because he has been trusted to play the full match in all of the qualifiers so far.

Even though Devenny is new to the international fold, he is a Premier League player, so he brings an underrated amount of quality to the match for Northern Ireland. He can shoot from range as well as get into goalscoring opportunities from the left.

📈 Slovakia v Northern Ireland Form & Stats

Slovakia come into this match currently holding that all-important second position. This is despite losing to Northern Ireland already in this group at Windsor Park. The reason that Slovakia remain above Northern Ireland is because they have already played and beaten Luxembourg home and away, and they had a shock win at home to Germany at the very beginning of the campaign.

However, their form was certainly lacking at Windsor Park. Northern Ireland were the better team and deserved their victory on the night. Prior to that 2-0 win over Germany, Slovakia had lost three internationals in a row, and had failed to gain promotion from Nations League B, losing a play-off to Slovenia. They have been lacking as an attacking force as well. Despite playing Luxembourg twice, they still only average three shots on target per match in this campaign, ranking them down at 39 of 54 nations currently in UEFA qualification.

Obviously, Northern Ireland come into this match with fewer points than Slovakia, but with a lot more optimism about their game. They have lost to Germany home and away, but there is certainly no shame in that, and they have already beaten Slovakia once at home and dismissed Luxembourg in an away match. Their qualification remains in their own hands, and the way that the team played in both of their wins, especially, gives good ground for expectation to be successful in these last two qualifiers.

Away form is a concern for Northern Ireland, though. They did win in Luxembourg at the beginning of this campaign, but prior to that, they hadn’t won a competitive away match since a 2-0 win in San Marino in March 2023. Friendly away wins have come against Estonia, Luxembourg, and Scotland in recent years, but their last away win against a nation ranked anywhere near Slovakia was in Greece in 2014.

📔 Slovakia v Northern Ireland Formation & Team News

Slovakia tend to use a 4-3-3 shape in most cases, though it could be possible to see them make some kind of switch considering how poorly they played last time against Northern Ireland.

Slovakia’s strength lies in their highly experienced back four and goalkeeper, all of whom have played for a long time together and at a high domestic level. Their midfield is more functional than exciting, and they tend to struggle for consistent output from their wide forwards.

Michael O’Neill looks to have an almost fully fit squad to select from, which is all he can ask for ahead of this vital set of fixtures. Shea Charles is the major exception here, with the Southampton midfielder currently out injured.

He is likely to stick with a 3-5-2 shape, which did them very well against Slovakia at Windsor Park. This system allows O'Neill to take advantage of his squad's areas of strength, which are in central defence and central midfield. Energy and hard work are the keys to Northern Irish success, and that will be guaranteed with this crop of players going into this important fixture.
