Not long ago, the Eredivisie title looked destined for Amsterdam, with Ajax holding a commanding 9-point lead and just five matches left to play.

Needing only six points from their final five outings to seal a 37th Dutch crown, their form up to that point, it looked like a routine finish for Ajax, but a dramatic collapse from Francesco Farioli’s side has turned the race on its head.

PSV have surged into pole position with six consecutive wins, now sitting top of the table on 76 points, one ahead of their faltering rivals.

As such, a win would guarantee PSV the title; however, should they drop points, Ajax are right on their tail.

It’s worth mentioning that in the unlikely circumstance that PSV lose and Ajax draw, PSV would be crowned Dutch champions, courtesy of their goal difference (+62), which far exceeds that of Ajax (+33).

Sparta Rotterdam, by contrast, have little to play for, sitting firmly in the midtable with neither a top-four finish nor relegation a plausible outcome.

That said, the result will have grand implications on their final position, given that no more than 2 points separate 8th from 14th. 

Maurice Steijn’s men currently sit in 11th with 39 points, but there exists a wide range of possible final permutations, depending on the result of this clash and a few others.

They rarely exceed this mark; in fact, they’ve managed to do so in just 28% of matches, with their home record also worse in that respect compared to their away one. PSV have brought this selection home in 5 of their last 6.

Sparta Rotterdam got off to a slow start this season and looked to be in significant danger of relegation early on.

They picked up no more than 12 points during the first half of the season, a rate which, should it have been sustained, would have placed them in 16th position, calling for a relegation play-off match.

As it so happens, Sparta were able to resurrect their season prospects, picking up 27 points in their 16 games since, partially courtesy of a managerial change, bringing in Maurice Steijn to replace Jeroen Rijsdijk.

They’ve excelled in recent matches, remaining undefeated in 9 of their last 10 in a run featuring 5 wins and 4 draws.

Last time out, they held out for a 1-1 stalemate against Utrecht away from home, but were firmly second-best and perhaps somewhat lucky to escape with a point.

⚫ PSV Surge to Eredivisie Summit After Remarkable Revival

As mentioned earlier, an unbelievable run of form (and some help from rivals, Ajax) has seen PSV surge into first place, with PSV now heavy favourites to win the Eredivisie.

They did this by bouncing back from a disappointing and slightly unlikely loss to Ajax, by winning six matches back-to-back.

This is a testament not only to PSV’s quality, but so to their resilience.

Most recently, PSV comfortably dispatched Heracles 4-1, creating 3.00xG in the process, while only conceding 0.65. They also fired off an impressive 30 shots to Heracles’ mere 3.

That said, PSV’s most crucial clash came a few days before as they took on Feyenoord away from home. 

On that occasion, despite being the better team throughout, PSV left it incredibly late to find a winner, relying on a 99th-minute Connor Lang goal to claim victory, with the score ending 3-2 in their favour.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, PSV boast a dominant record across previous showings of this clash, having recorded wins in each of the last five, with a similar trend persisting beyond that.

That said, Sparta Rotterdam did give PSV a tough run of it in the reverse fixture, in which PSV eventually emerged as 2-1 victors.

De Kasteelheren took an early lead through Tobias Lauritsen, but two quickfire PSV goals saw Peter Bosz’s men go into the break ahead.

A 49th-minute Matteo Dams red card threatened to shake things up as PSV went down to 10, but they held firm and saw the game out.

It’s worth noting that at the time, Sparta Rotterdam were still under Jeroen Rijsdijk, hence these managers are actually yet to meet in their current capacities.
