In a first-time tongue-tie, the unexposed type ran a fair ninth in the Ebor Handicap, and has been dropped a handy 2lb in the weights. A big performance awaits, if replicating that improved effort, with a second on dole start here another positive.

HANKELOW was a hugely expensive 750,000gns yearling but impressed in a clearcut debut victory at York.

This looks a logical stepping stone for Epic Poet’s half-brother, who is bred to be a smart type. He also has some exciting entries, in group company, which suggest he may be a serious performer in the making.

Despite disappointing in the G1 Nunthorpe Stakes, LADY IMAN definitely deserves another chance. She had form figures of 11121 prior that one poor run, and that came at the top table.

She is back against her own sex and age group, which ought to help, and she has the beating of some of these from earlier in the season at Goodwood.

My bet of the day is the ultra consistent SWEET WILLIAM, in the G2 Doncaster Cup over 2m2f. The hardy Sea The Stars gelding has raced in all of the top staying contests this campaign – registering an excellent third in Group One company on penultimate run.

He won this last season and we know is guaranteed to stay the distance, which cannot be said for a few in the lineup (including main market rival Sunway).

One of the sound each-way protagonists must be CHILLI QUEEN, who arrives in scintillating form. The Havana Gold filly has won three subsequent races, since being raised to this 1m4f journey. Her last success was at Ascot and she has been raised 5lb.

She beat a subsequent second in a hot York handicap, which boosted the form. Despite this being a race full of improving types, I think Chilli Queen is a value play at fair odds.

CLASSIC CUVEE showed plenty to suggest she can win a maiden, after a debut runner-up position at Newmarket.

She is a half-sister to nine winners so ought to have the pedigree to go close here. Any market support for the newcomers would obviously be encouraging, though.

I think BORN SLIPPY is overpriced in the 6f nursery. The Ardad colt got off the mark on his fifth start – at Ffos Las last month.

He looks to be improving with racing and could be peaking at the right time for this assignment, for a trainer who arrives in good form. Look for him to race handily from the start.

Let’s go out with a bang. CITY CAPTAIN can build on a highly productive season, switched back to turf. He put in a fair fourth-placed-finish on the all-weather at Southwell last time, but should progress back in handicap company on grass (3-3 in such contests).

I’d be surprised if he weren’t able to rate higher still and his trainer has been in fine form lately – she has notched three winners from 11 runners in the past fortnight.
