Augsburg Double Chance

Augsburg took four points off St Pauli last season, winning 3-1 at the WWK Arena, before snatching a point on their travels with a 1-1 draw.

Losing at home was a familiar trend for St Pauli last season, who managed just 14 points from their 17 home games. In that time, they scored a measly 10 goals, winning only three matches. That pattern has continued this term, as St Pauli stole a point off Dortmund on the opening weekend with a late comeback, after the visitors were reduced to 10 men.

Mathias Pereira Lage to have 1+ Shots on Target

St Pauli lost a lot of key personnel over the summer, with the most notable being top scorer, Morgan Guilavogui. New signing Mathias Pereira Lage has been drafted in from Brest to try and replace his output in the final third.

The Portuguese international typically featured on the left-wing for Brest last season, but has been deployed centrally for his new club. Because of that, he has an average of 3.0 shots per game this season, noticeably higher than his 1.24 shots per game in the French top flight last season.

🟤 Kiezkicker Defying Expectations

Following their long-awaited return to the Bundesliga last season, St Pauli were barely able to hold on to their top-flight status, finishing three points above the relegation zone. The summer transfer window saw the departure of some key starters, namely Philipp Treu, Morgan Guilavogui, Elias Saad and Johannes Eggestein, and hopes of pulling off another survival were looking slim.

However, results so far have been incredibly promising for St Pauli. An unbeaten start has Kiezkicker in 5th place, taking a point from Dortmund in gameweek one, and three against the newly-promoted Hamburg.

Notably, their opponents have received a red card in both games. Against Hamburg, St Pauli were much the better side regardless of the sending off, but they did benefit massively against Dortmund. Filippo Mane was sent off after 85 minutes with Dortmund 3-1 up, and St Pauli were able to make a late comeback and tie the game at 3-3.

A Positive Start For Wagner

There were a lot of question marks surrounding Augsburg’s decision to appoint Sandro Wagner as manager for the upcoming campaign. The 37-year-old was the assistant manager of the German national team under Julian Nagelsmann, and was at 4th division side Unterhaching before his international stint, so has very limited managerial experience.

The two-time Bundesliga champion is perhaps better known for his playing career, scoring 44 goals in 180 appearances in the German top flight, featuring for Werder Bremen, Hertha Berlin, Darmstadt, Hoffenheim and Bayern Munich.

The veteran strikers’ influence on his side potentially helps explain why Augsburg have been able to over-perform their xG so far, scoring three times from 1.34 xG against Freiburg on the opening weekend, and twice from 0.51 xG against Bayern.

Wagner has opted for a 3-4-3 shape, and has his team pressing intensely. In fact, Augsburg have racked up the most infringements in the Bundesliga so far, averaging 16.0 fouls per game.

📊 St Pauli vs Augsburg H2H

Prior to their two head-to-head encounters last season, St Pauli and Augsburg last met in the second division back in 2010. St Pauli won that game 3-0, while Augsburg won 3-2 in the reverse fixture at home.
