Godoy Cruz v Lanús
🏟
Sunday 17th July – 5:00PM KO
Lanús are having an absolute shocker this season in the Liga Profesional. They are second to bottom in the league table, were eliminated from the Copa Sudamericana by Independiente del Valle and this week they also got eliminated from the Argentinian cup. The Copa Sudamericana elimination cost manager Jorge Almirón his job and he was replaced by interim Rodrigo Acosta, but that hasn’t changed much so far. In fact, that cup match was probably the biggest shock of them all. Just like today, they played against Godoy Cruz and lost 3-1. The side from Mendoza only played subs, where Lanús were playing pretty much their strongest XI, but still got thumped.
Godoy Cruz on the other hand are performing above early expectations. Their goal ahead of this season was to avoid relegation, but with 10 points from the last four league games they can even look up to international tournaments. The cup victory was surprising, but the biggest victory came last weekend, when Godoy Cruz pushed the struggling River Plate deeper down the drain in El Monumental. Two early goals sealed the deal and even a late first half red card from centre back Gianluca Ferrari didn’t make them budge.
Ferrari won’t be there against Lanús, but his replacement Guillermo Ortiz was a regular until a couple of weeks ago, so that shouldn’t be too much of an issue. Lanús sacked their manager, but are in the worst possible position possible and I don’t see them turn that around ahead of this game, that’s why I suspect this will end in a home victory.

Banfield v San Lorenzo
🏟
Sunday 17th July – 7:30PM KO
Banfield has generally been a team that defends well. Manager Claudio Vivas stands for an organised defence and trying to take their chances from there. But lately, there have been some cracks in that steady defence. In the 3-2 home defeat against Union de Santa Fe, Banfield conceded quickly each time they were on a draw. On the other hand, this season marks the break through for striker Ramiro Enrique, who is on five goals from the last three league games. The striker had suffered from injuries most of this year, but since he is fit, he has been one of the most important players in this side.
After a rough start with internal issues, power struggles and violent fans, San Lorenzo are finally picking up a bit. It stands out that, especially later in the game, they seem a lot fitter than their opponents and that has given them several points in the last few games. Adam Bareiro has been important in the improved version of the team. The Paraguayan striker joined the side at the start of this year, but needed some time to adjust. With five goals from seven matches, Bareiro has been key this season and although San Lorenzo are still not where they want to be, things start to look a bit better. Federico Gattoni is the other player that really stood out, but the centre back sparked interest from Feyenoord, among other Dutch sides, and could leave in the next couple of weeks.
Both teams have a striker in great form and that should bid well for goals in this match between two mid-table teams.
